[opensuse-kde3][42.1] Failed to start X Display Manager
This occurs every boot since updates just performed on 42.1. which included update from kernel-default-4.1.36-41.1.x86_64 to kernel-default-4.1.36-44.1.x86_64. Usually on boot when I see the greeter I switch to vtty3 to do a little manual maintenance as root before normal user login. It now takes quite some time before the waiting on display-manager.service start message to clear before I see a login prompt, even though the display-manager.service has obviously gotten the greeter going successfully. I do not use 42.1 much, just install updates, so I have not noticed this. But now I've checked my "messages" file (I installed syslog) and I see something similar, though not exactly the same: 2017-01-24T17:30:01.212032+02:00 pc systemd[1]: Started User Manager for UID 0. 2017-01-24T17:30:11.067265+02:00 pc systemd[1]: display-manager.service start operation timed out. Hi Mark and Felix, Can you please say more about this? Are you still able to start KDE3? Thanks, Gianluca On Tue, 24 Jan 2017, Mark Goldstein wrote:

It works. The bug is simply an annoying delay NAICT. The only critical KDE3 bug, and it's critical only to those whose ability to see is severely limited, is non-usable Festival 981271. I've been using KDE3 on 42.1 as primary desktop for over a year. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/buglist.cgi?chfieldfrom=9w&chfieldto=Now&classification=openSUSE&component=KDE3&list_id=5865977&query_format=advanced I did just upgrade a formerly KDE3 on RAID1 i586 13.1 installation to TDE on 42.2, and reported so on [opensuse]. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Dear all, I installed Leap 42.1. I decided to select KDE, which refers to plasma5, as default during installation. I got the plasma5 kdm. Then I logged in remotely and installed the KDE3 packages, kdebase3-session, etc. I then restarted the X server and tried to login to KDE3 by selecting it in the drop down list, but instead it took me back to the kdm login screen. I switched to runlevel 3 and set WINDOWMANAGER to /usr/bin/startkde3. I also had to set the setuid for Xorg to use startx. At the first login attempt, KDE3 launched but then crashed. At the second login attempt, it worked, but it seems to get mixed up with plasma. The plasma panel appears below kicker and I get some of plasma widgets on the screen. I would appreciate any help from this mailing list. How do I prevent plasma from interfering in the KDE3 session? Would it be better to switch the desktop manager from plasma to KDE3 and how do I do that best? These are the KDE3 packages that I installed: kdebase3-session kdebase3-apps kdebase3-nsplugin kdebase3-SuSE kdebase3-SuSE-branding-openSUSE kdeartwork3 misc-console kdeartwork3-xscreensaver kde3-kcm_gtk (kdebase3-workspace was automatically selected) I also need to add that the plasma desktop manager does not let me login to any window manager, I tried LXDE, Xfce and TWM next to KDE3. I would appreciate any help! Thanks! How do I prevent plasma from interfering in the KDE3 session?
Would it be better to switch the desktop manager from plasma to KDE3 and how do I do that best?
These are the KDE3 packages that I installed:
kdebase3-session kdebase3-apps kdebase3-nsplugin kdebase3-SuSE kdebase3-SuSE-branding-openSUSE kdeartwork3 misc-console kdeartwork3-xscreensaver kde3-kcm_gtk (kdebase3-workspace was automatically selected)
kdebase3-runtime needs to be installed: # rpm -qa kdebase3 | sort kdebase3-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-11.3-117.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-branding-openSUSE-11.3-117.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-lang-11.3-117.1.noarch kdebase3-apps-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-kdm-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-ksysguardd-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-runtime-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-session-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-workspace-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64
I also need to add that the plasma desktop manager does not let me login to any window manager, I tried LXDE, Xfce and TWM next to KDE3.
I'm pretty sure your login manager having chosen KDE at install time is sddm, not kdm. In any event, if KDE3 is going to be your default DE, I suggest installing kdebase3-kdm, then changing /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager to contain DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3" and /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager to contain DEFAULT_WM="startkde". Those are what my 42.1/KDE3 have. If you don't expect to want to run a Plasma session, uninstall plasma5-session. That way there shouldn't be a Plasma session to get mixed up with a KDE3 session. The only plasma* packages installed here are two branding packages. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi Felix, Thanks for the answer. kdebase3-runtime is already installed, it was automatically selected. I will try out your suggestions about switching display manager. I'm not sure whether the problems with the current display manager could be due to the noveau instead of nvidia driver. If I uninstall plasma5-session do I still get applications like okular? The KDE people seem to have made a big deal about Plasma Desktop and KDE apps being independent of each other. Okular is an app. You could run it in Gnome AFAIK. Plasma the session is not required to be able to run Okular. That kind of requirement would have Firefox or Gimp unable to run except in a Gnome session.

I don't know. Someone on the [opensuse-kde] list ought to know. In the meantime, Plasma 5 settings are kept in various locations in ~/.config/. Getting rid of those should make that extra taskbar go away. Probably ~/.config/plasma* and ~/.config/k* should do it without damaging anything you care about. If that turns out not to be enough, try those there that begin startup and systemsettings. ~/.config/session and ~/.config/plasma-workspace also belong to Plasma 5. Hi Felix, I moved the entire .config to a different folder. The taskbar still comes up. I also have other problems like kcontrol cannot show any previews, like for the Window Decorations. Did you install KDE3 on 42.1 doing a minimal X installation? I have another question: I would like to find the kwin-decor-suse2 package but I think that it is no longer included in the latest KDE3 repositories. Is there a way to access KDE3 repositories older than 13.1? I installed kdebase3-kdm and now I have a working display manager. Thanks, Gianluca On Thu, 26 Jan 2017, Felix Miata wrote:

Hi Ilya,
Sorry, I'm confused. How can I download it?
1. Add repository KDE:KDE3, install from there 2. Use the links on the right-hand side of the linked page 3. Use OpenSUSE software search: https://software.opensuse.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Plasma's? Time to try asking on [opensuse-kde], or you could try picking off plasma5 packages one at a time until it stops, maybe starting with plasma5-workspace. like that doesn't seem to work, I try applying, then reverting if I don't like result.
Did you install KDE3 on 42.1 doing a minimal X installation?
Shortly following a minimal X installation, after setting: zypp.conf: solver.onlyRequires = true zypper.conf: installRecommends = no
I have another question: I would like to find the kwin-decor-suse2 package but I think that it is no longer included in the latest KDE3 repositories.
# zypper se -s suse2 | kde3-kwinstyle-suse2 | package | 0.4.1-56.1 | x86_64 | KDE3 | kde3-kwinstyle-suse2-debuginfo | package | 0.4.1-56.1 | x86_64 | KDE3 | kde3-kwinstyle-suse2-debugsource | package | 0.4.1-56.1 | x86_64 | KDE3 Do any of those look like what you are missing? Sometimes names change. Ilya seems to say what you seek still exists.
Is there a way to access KDE3 repositories older than 13.1?
I installed kdebase3-kdm and now I have a working display manager.

Hi Felix, Thanks I found kde3-kwinstyle-suse2. Do you have any idea whether TDE allows plasma to be installed alongside? Thanks, Gianluca On Fri, 27 Jan 2017, Felix Miata wrote:

AFAIK, only KDE3 cannot be installed alongside TDE. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. So you could select kde/plasma as default during installation and then install TDE later. Thanks for all your help! Gianluca On Fri, 27 Jan 2017, Felix Miata wrote:
