Start from non graphical installation and install your way up carefully to KDE3 at the same time making sure no plasma packages aregetting installed.
Do first thing after install completes: solver.onlyRequires = true in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf. Taking all the suggests/recommends without question translates to bloat for dubious benefit.
Yes, that was what I did on another system (minimal X and then added KDE3). My purpose was to have both kde3 (as main desktop) and plasma5 (try configuring it to my taste, which was impossible till now). I'm afraid at some stage we'll be forsed to switch from KDE3. KDE4 had some bugs that were never fixed and made it not-usable for me. So I'm trying other options.
I'm seeing as much lost as gained in Plasma as upstream continues reinventing the wheel and leaving old bugs lie fallow or wontfix. It's looking to me since Ilya retired as KDE3 maintainer like when 42.1 support expires and upgrading to 42.2 becomes necessary that KDE3 will likely no longer be viable. Luckily, TDE has a respectable multi-distro user and developer base, and has had most remaining KDE3 bugs eradicated without any material loss of functionality, or noticeable bloating. The main thing I don't like about TDE is the menu is nearly void of submenus, so finding wanted apps takes considerably more vertical eye movement scanning longer listings. Another thing I don't like is it isn't built for TW, which is not a concern for my primary machine, but does limit its triage utility. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
