Hi Felix, Thanks for the answer. kdebase3-runtime is already installed, it was automatically selected. I will try out your suggestions about switching display manager. I'm not sure whether the problems with the current display manager could be due to the noveau instead of nvidia driver. If I uninstall plasma5-session do I still get applications like okular? Also, you mean startkde3 for DEFAULT_WM? These are my kdebase3 packages: rpm -qa | grep kdebase3 | sort kdebase3-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-apps-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-ksysguardd-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-nsplugin-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-runtime-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-session-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-11.3-117.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-branding-openSUSE-11.3-117.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-lang-11.3-117.1.noarch kdebase3-workspace-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 Thanks! I installed Leap 42.1. I decided to select KDE, which refers to plasma5, as default during installation. I got the plasma5 kdm. Then I logged in remotely and installed the KDE3 packages, kdebase3-session, etc. I then restarted the X server and tried to login to KDE3 by selecting it in the drop down list, but instead it took me back to the kdm login screen. I switched to runlevel 3 and set WINDOWMANAGER to /usr/bin/startkde3. I also had to set the setuid for Xorg to use startx. At the first login attempt, KDE3 launched but then crashed. At the second login attempt, it worked, but it seems to get mixed up with plasma. The plasma panel appears below kicker and I get some of plasma widgets on the screen. I would appreciate any help from this mailing list.
How do I prevent plasma from interfering in the KDE3 session?
Would it be better to switch the desktop manager from plasma to KDE3 and how do I do that best?
These are the KDE3 packages that I installed:
kdebase3-session kdebase3-apps kdebase3-nsplugin kdebase3-SuSE kdebase3-SuSE-branding-openSUSE kdeartwork3 misc-console kdeartwork3-xscreensaver kde3-kcm_gtk (kdebase3-workspace was automatically selected)
kdebase3-runtime needs to be installed:
# rpm -qa kdebase3 | sort kdebase3-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-11.3-117.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-branding-openSUSE-11.3-117.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-lang-11.3-117.1.noarch kdebase3-apps-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-kdm-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-ksysguardd-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-runtime-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-session-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64 kdebase3-workspace-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64
I also need to add that the plasma desktop manager does not let me login to any window manager, I tried LXDE, Xfce and TWM next to KDE3.
I'm pretty sure your login manager having chosen KDE at install time is sddm, not kdm. In any event, if KDE3 is going to be your default DE, I suggest installing kdebase3-kdm, then changing /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager to contain DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3" and /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager to contain DEFAULT_WM="startkde". Those are what my 42.1/KDE3 have.
If you don't expect to want to run a Plasma session, uninstall plasma5-session. That way there shouldn't be a Plasma session to get mixed up with a KDE3 session. The only plasma* packages installed here are two branding packages. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation)
