I guess this is a bug, but it's not an issue for me because I'm just using a blank screen saver.
I got to the bottom of this and added the info to the bug report (old) https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1195139 The problem is a Mesa/libEGL problem that for Nvidia has been patched in the 470 driver (G05 forward).
