Thanks! This solved part of the problem. By setting the width to 20 and above the icons are arranged in a single row. However, the icons themselves are not resized. Even if I set the width to 32 they simply get spaced wider apart but remain small. Do I need to set a parameter to allow rescaling? In older versions, it was programmed to take 22px icons, and now it's "fixed" to take 16px icons. AFAIK there is/was no scaling.
Another question: what is the location of the systray icons in my file system? I could try copying the larger icons from an older distribution. /opt/kde3/share/icons/hicolor/ (size) /apps/

Thanks!

Is there a way to force re-scaling of the icons to the same size as in previous releases? Probably just that rebuilding thing
Also, the file ~/.kde/share/config/systemtray_panelappletrc did not exist in my home folder and I had to create it. Is there somewhere a template for panelappletrc? Maybe I'm missing some important keywords. I don't think there's any other options in this file.
Thanks a lot for keeping up KDE 3.5!

The icons are part of the each program respectively.
