I think I have a way to catch it. I can background a script that simply loops:
dcop kmix Mixer0 masterVolume
to get the volume every 3 sec or so saving last and current values and then throw a kdialog message when the volume changes.
This occurs only on first desktop start after boot. Ending current session and logging back in this volume change doesn't trigger. I've opened about every app I normally do. I doubt it is command line related, but may be. If anybody else is seeing this, you can save the following script and make it executable and add it to ~/.kde/Autostart so it is started on desktop start. All it does is crudely throw up a YesNo dialog when the volume changes (choose "No" to end the program or "Yes" to leave it running in the background after each dialog) https://paste.opensuse.org/0a6fa089372e -- David C.
