have you tried to set it up in /etc/sysconfig ?
According to http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde3/2012-09/msg00049.html that answer is yes.
(yast -> sysconfig editor -> Desktop -> Display manager -> DISPLAYMANAGER -> type / choose "kdm3")
Ncurses yast is too clumsy. Besides, if I use startx to get into KDE to use YaST2, it defeats finding the root of the problem, which is why installing kdebase3-kdm with zypper following a minimal X install doesn't result in getting a KDM3 login window on boot, even after manually configuring /etc/sysconfig/displaymanger with DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3". I have little doubt I could reset solver.onlyRequires to false, enable repositorites/KDE3:/KDE3, use startx to get into YaST2 and let it install much I don't want in order to get the little I need to fix this, but I'm more interested in figuring out if there is a broken dep that needs fixing, hence the thread. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
