Thanks for the answer. kdebase3-runtime is already installed, it was automatically selected. I will try out your suggestions about switching display manager. I'm not sure whether the problems with the current display manager could be due to the noveau instead of nvidia driver. Highly unlikely.
If I uninstall plasma5-session do I still get applications like okular?
The KDE people seem to have made a big deal about Plasma Desktop and KDE apps being independent of each other. Okular is an app. You could run it in Gnome AFAIK. Plasma the session is not required to be able to run Okular. That kind of requirement would have Firefox or Gimp unable to run except in a Gnome session.
Also, you mean startkde3 for DEFAULT_WM?
No: # which startkde /opt/kde3/bin/startkde # which startkde3 /usr/bin/startkde3 # grep start /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager DEFAULT_WM="startkde" # ll /usr/share/xsessions/* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 172 Oct 25 2015 /usr/share/xsessions/icewm.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3904 Oct 23 09:22 /usr/share/xsessions/kde.desktop (KDE4 & 5 sessions are Plasma sessions.) -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
