Hi all, I' am running SuSe 6.0 I have set up routing, but when I start "route" the machine starts to dial to my IP. the /var/log/messages says OPEN: 192.168.2.1 -> UDP, port: 1035 -> 53 Does anyone know what this means? The same happens when I open "messeger" in Netscape, the machine starts dialing to the internet. Can somebody give me an suggestion or solution for this behavior? Thanks rgd Wil

have a look at /etc/services, that will show you
"domain 53/UDP #Domain Name Server

michael@gonzo:~>cat /etc/services | grep 53 domain 53/tcp nameserver # name-domain server domain 53/udp nameserver [...] aahhh, DNS. If you only type 'route .....' route trys to resolve the Domain-Name. So if it doesn't appear in your /etc/hosts it will ask the bind an then ..... You know what happen then. Try 'route -n .....'. In this case route won't resolve then Domain-Name. Next thing to do is a 'man route'. Till then, Michael -- BH: Doesn't that hurt? B: Yeah, but you know - no pain no gain. (Beavis and Butthead)

Hi Wil, your machine tries to resolve the names of the *device* and *networks* listed with "route". Try "route -n" to "prevent" this. ;-) The better solution is to add all devices IP's to /etc/hosts and the *network* addresses to /etc/networks. This should help. cheers Juergen Example for /etc/networks: # # networks This file describes a number of netname-to-address # mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly # used at boot time, when no name servers are running. # loopback 127.0.0.0 localnet 192.168.42.0 HamNet 44.130.0.0 -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
