Invis server in a virtual machine
I won't have a dedicated hardware for the Invis server, at least not in my first 'lab phase' when I have to use my AM3 machine as a combined home workstation and server. Did I hear that's a bad idea :) Now and then I have played a little with Xen virtualization on openSUSE, and the SLES/Xen/OES2/W2k3TS evironment works well for us on my workplace, though not configured technically by myself. Can Invis be installed and run streamlined on a Xen/openSUSE virtual machine (domU), or will this complicate? Terje J. A couple of days ago my smallest production box was a 2003 HP tc2110 server with a single CPU Pentium-4 1700MHz 3x256MB RAM and slow 7200rpm disks. It was set up as an "pre invis machine" in - hmmm- 2006 or 2007 when Stefan Schaefer released his book "Der Linux Server" which I followed pretty closely back in those days. The machine got replaced just last week (having 400plus days of uptime) - so I assume hardware doesn't matter too much as long as there's sufficient RAM (oder rather fast dedicated swapdisks like a set of 15krpm U320s). I guess for any environment with sub 10 users a PIII-1300 with enough RAM will be plenty .... Cheers Markus

I run two virtual invis machines - one on sun's virtualbox (now oracle i believe) for demonstration purposes and the other one is in production on a large scale ESX-cluster at Novartis institutes for biomedical research - both perform exceptionally fine fulfilling all the duties they are meant for ... I don't know XEN too well but I think it'll be all right to run a virtual suse server on a suse host if it works fine on other vendors vm-host products ...... Cheers Markus

Hello Terje, yes it's possible to install invis Servers in virtual Machines. But there are a few difficulties: 1. With XEN 3.x it was impossible to run the DHCP-Server in a domU. We installed him on dom0, with the problem the the invis-domU with his LDAP-Directory had to start before you start the DHCP-Server on dom0. To realize this is a little bit tricky. 2. Using the FAX-Function is not easy. When we tried this, we use "mtg capri" as a LAN-CAPI Server and Client infrastructure to let the invis domU access the FritzCard of the dom0. 3. invis Servers are routers for internet-connection, this functionality should be transferred to the dom0. For Testing testing-purpose we installed invis in VirtualBox-Machines. Without the FAX-Functionality this worked very well. Markus and Stefan, Thank you both for your replies and comments. As I understand this now, the openSUSE Invis server (mostly) can be installed and run as a paravirtual guest OS, just as plain openSUSE can do. 1. With previous Xen-openSUSE 11.x host OS I did succeed to install different guest OS, after some bug reports. Now I did a couple of new tests with recent versions that didn't succeed: a) with Xen-openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 as host OS on dom0 vm-install loaded the openSUSE 11.3 installation DVD ok but ran into an error message initializing the package manager: 'Unable to create repository from URL 'hd:/?device=/dev/xvdb' b) with Xen-openSUSE 11.4 Milstone 2 x86_64 as host OS 'Failed to start vm-install' Other experiences? Looks like I may have to report new bugs for both cases. 2. Fax function I don't need a fax card as I have the possibilities to receive (seldom) faxes remotely at our office MF/Fax machine. (Though it could be useful to be able to generate and send ps files to the fax, as is possible using Lexmark's proprietary printerdriver) 3. Router For home use I have a Linksys WRT54GL router and ADSL modem. Shouldn't Linksys work also for Invis? Another question: Is it possible to set up and access the server without having a fixed IP address? Terje J.
