[heroes] We don't need another Hero

Hi, My name is Olav Reinert, and I'd like to volunteer some of my time to help the openSUSE project by becoming a Hero. I'm not sure exactly what it takes to perform that role, but I'd like to submit the following as "qualifications": * I've been an openSUSE user for 15 years or so. * I started contributing packages to the distro about 5 years ago. * I run some server infrastructure at home. * My day job is Java application programming, and I also design and maintain a lot of Linux infrastructure at work. * I know another Hero, Per Jessen, personally - we live close to each other, and meet from time to time. * I have a Masters degree in computer science.
That's enough from me - looking forward to hear from you. Regards, Olav Reinert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org

I think, you are very qualified. It is not always easy to find good places to contribute. Since you have experience in Java and packaging, I was always worried that our ci.opensuse.org ran a Jenkins where we could not even apply trivial patches, because we do not build it from source, but just re-package the upstream war file: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/devel:tools:building/jenkins Now that we have 55 maven packages in Factory, maybe that has become easier? https://progress.opensuse.org/projects/opensuse-admin/issues Is another good starting point to find things to do (but then you need the proper permissions and know-how) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org

I say we get Olav a userid and vpn access as soon as possible.
So, has anyone already acted on this? Is there a ticket for it? At least, I couldn't find any such ticket. Olav, would you be willing to file such a request to admin@opensuse.org, just to have some traceability in the future. I'm willing to set everything up and make sure you'll get access to the heroes VPN. Best regards, Karol Babioch

My idea was to take a look at the mirror system, specifically the hotstuff selections, which haven't been working for a while, apparently.
It was news to me that Apache Maven is part of Factory now - amazing. I don't know how hard it is to build Jenkins from source, nor do I know how RPM packages of Java applications are made, but I can look into it. Sounds like a good idea - I've seen several mirror admins asking about it in the tickets. I can setup your VPN account, but I'll need - your openSUSE username (as used for bugzilla/OBS/wiki/... login) - your GPG fingerprint (if your key is on the keyserver network), otherwise your public key Sending this to admin@opensuse.org would be perfect ;-) Please also login on progress.opensuse.org once so that I can give you some permissions there. Oh, and please come to the meeting in Nuremberg in November ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz -- Oh, ich hatte einen ";)))" vergessen. Ich liebe die Community!
