[heroes] nntp server ?

Maybe we should move this from private to heroes@o.o . Forums admins are interested, a forums user offered to help out. My own tech knowledge/ experience in this area is rusted/outdated/90%forgotten.
If you know about running inn, that's not outdated - old, but not outdated :-) To anyone who is listening in here - we are working on setting up a news server to replace the one in Provo which is being decommissioned. Carlos has volunteered to look at setting up inn, for now we are waiting to get him some access and a VM, but he will most likely play around with a private setup anyway. I had assumed the Provo setup was also running inn, and that we would be able to glean the setup - it turns out that is not the case. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (25.1°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org

To be on the safe side, let me quickly explain - I am in no way running this "project", I'm just another heroes member. I heard that we have an active community using nntp for the forums, and I thought it would be a pity to cut them off. I am however responsible for cajoling Carlos into volunteering :-) and I happen to also have my own news server running, set up 13-14 years ago. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (24.8°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org

I was afraid of that, but wasn't sure.

Hi What I'm doing now is reading docs on inn, and installing it on a virtual machine at home (install done). If you know of an "inn for dummies" text, please speak up ;-) Now I'm wondering how to try download the existing message database into this one. I have already downloaded them into another machine using leafnode instead, which is familiar to me, so there is at least a copy of the opensuse.* messages (there are several other hierarchies: attachmate.*, microfocus.*, netiq.*, novell.*, and suse.* I assume the only one of interest to us is opensuse.org.* -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. A hurdle I had not thought of: inn doesn't run. It has not been prepared for systemd, the service inn.service does not exist, and the init script fails when it doesn't find it. news2:~ # /usr/sbin/rcinn status News-Server INN: unused Unit inn.service could not be found. news2:~ # I'll ask on the general mail list about this. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. news2:~ # /usr/sbin/rcinn status News-Server INN: unused Unit inn.service could not be found. news2:~ #
I'll ask on the general mail list about this.
The answer is no doubt to create the systemd units etc. OTOH, it works on 13.2 on my server: # systemctl status inn inn.service - LSB: Inter Net News Server (INN) Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/inn) Active: active (exited) since Fri 2018-11-16 18:28:05 CET; 6 months 30 days ago Process: 1238 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/inn start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) I see the sysvinit scripts are by Florian La Roche - I think he's one of the three SuSE founders. Something like that. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (21.9°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: heroes+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: heroes+owner@opensuse.org

I'll open a bugzilla, the file is missing and I have no idea what to put in it. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)
