[heroes] suse.com in bugmail; dates missing in list archives

Shame, shame, shame. >:-( https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/ is the only BZ root URL that should show up on an openSUSE mailing list. Could the list software be made to convert suse.com to opensuse.org before sending list mails? openSUSE lists are about the openSUSE project and distribution, so anything outside that, no matter how important it might be for Linux generally, or the world generally, is, in general, unwelcome. Unwelcome arguably includes links incorporating bugzilla.netiq.com, bugzilla.novell.com and bugzilla.suse.com. While those will usually provide the desired content, users are better served by equivalent links incorporating the project name. Bugzilla.opensuse.org presents a skin compatible with the rest of the openSUSE project that won't pause or perplex a new user finding such link via a context other than receiving the email, and won't frustrate openSUSE users with multiple links to the same destination among search results. BTW, the hyperkitty archive is miserable, miserable miserable. These are just a few of the ways: 1-I'm searching for the archive copy for a particular date. There are no dates to see without hovering, the same problem in many bug trackers. Ago "dates" are just awful. 2-semi-visible #999 text. I need to scan (which means I need to see) through dates without hovering to find what I'm looking for in a busy list. 3-posts are not shown as they looked in their original form. They're scrunched into a portion of window width that supports less than 80 characters, causing most post lines to display wrapped, with more whitespace width on either side of the posts than the width devoted to posts. 4-10 posts returned by default is far too few. 100 posts produces the same problem as download.opensuse.org file listings: 6831669 bytes just in HTML in the current page I have open, more than 10X that of a typical bloated web page, and this not counting bytes in CSS or JS files or in images. 5-Those numbered icons to the right of synopses, under the agos, are useless bloat. Why are they there? What are they good for? 6-Ditto for the icons left of synopses. -- Evolution as taught in public schools, like religion, is based on faith, not on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. It was simply the link that I was given in the automatic bug update :-) I was too lazy to change it.

No doubt it could.

This is really off-topic here, Felix.

On bugs.lists.o.o, I see both bugzilla.suse and bugzilla.opensuse, I'm not sure what makes a report be one or the other. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.4°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes

I think it depends on which site the person updating a bug used. OTOH in your mail you also wanted mails to look the way they were sent and I agree that we should not replace links in there. Maybe this helps: https://github.com/bmwiedemann/obsbugzilla/commit/94f421afc811c76eb00096fc00...

I agree with that expectation. This would be a unique special case on account of wanting *open* SUSE to be distinguishable from non-open SUSE, not just at the instance of reading email, but also in web search hits. Searching nsuse instead of suse should not be omitting relevant hits that are really about openSUSE rather than SUSE. IMO RedHat did a much better job spinning off Fedora rather than openRedHat. Possibly the fact of change could be included in the post footer, without explicitly referring to suse.com, like when "names have been changed to protect the innocent" is used on TV. Possibly a more digestible change would be adding rather than replacing, but that wouldn't excise the general off-topicness of non-open SUSE URLs.
Maybe this helps: https://github.com/bmwiedemann/obsbugzilla/commit/94f421afc811c76eb00096fc00...
I can't tell what it means, or would mean. -- Evolution as taught in public schools, like religion, is based on faith, not on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! Felix Miata *** http://fm.no-ip.com/

Then where? https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=863582 ? "Each bug report should have only one URL" - Confirmed

Are we using the only available theme? I don't expect to find time to get involved with it. There's nothing about it I like. I expressed this in at least one openSUSE mailing list long before the switch was actually implemented. I liked what we had much better. I hate abundant whitespace on web pages in all forms. Staying one topic at a time there would be a big problem. I'm already too scattered, inadequately rested, and too often interrupted, since becoming my mom's primary caregiver. It's a thought though, so maybe just once, some day. -- Evolution as taught in public schools, like religion, is based on faith, not on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! This list is primarily intended for the communication amongst the volunteers looking after the openSUSE infrastructure. I think you will find that we are, generally speaking, techies with little interest in policy or politics. If you are unhappy with content posted on our mailing lists or any of our other means of communication, I suggest you start with the list itself, then contact the owner, maybe the moderators, or if those all fail, you contact our board.

FWIW, I agree with you that the hyperkitty archive sucks. For the time being, it is not an itch I personally have much desire to scratch. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.1°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes
