Greetings!
Has anyone managed to get GPSK31 or KPSK working with SuSE8.2?
I have been trying for ages to get them working. All I get are two error messages:
Unable to open audio device /dev/audio. Inexact sampling rate: request for 8000 resulted in 48000
/dev/audio has the correct permissions, as far as I can tell (owner root, group audio). I have tried altering it to me as the owner.
I have tried altering the sample rate in K Control Centre --> Sound system, but it has no effect. I have also tried disabling aRTs.
Starting the programs in Libranet gives the same error messages, but I can run PSK31 without problems in Windows98.
Any advice will be gratefully received.

Keith, just a guess, but does Suse find the sound card ?? I know Mandrake does not find ISA soundcards no matter what you do. I ended up buying a PCI card. BTW most onboard sound is run in ISA mode. GL...73

Hi Keith,
KPSK is working like a champ here under Suse 8.2. What kind of of soundcard do you use? It looks that you have a AC97 like Soundcard.
These cards can't switch to another sample rate than 48000. Under M$shit the multimedia lib will do resample, under Linux is no such lib. I had to disable the onboard sound and insert my old SB PCI 128. I heard that Alsa hase the resampling feature but I dont know if its working with a AC97 sound card.

It's an AC97 chip on the MotherBoard. From what you have both said, that seems to be the problem. I'll have to get a cheap PCI 128 card, which I suppose must be Sound blaster compatible. I don't do any hi-fi stuff on the computer, so it doesn't need to be a very expensive one. Many thanks for the advice and information. I really do appreciate it. 73 Keith G4JVX

P.S. I forgot to add that SuSE does find the sound chip, as does Libranet. I can play system sounds and CDs. Keith

Hello Thomas. Thank you for the information. I think that it has worked! The KPSK program now starts, but I have not had a chance to check if it resolves any PSK signals. When I found I couldn't run PSK in SuSE, I used the rig/computer interconnecting leads for something else. So I will have to make some others before I can try it, which will probably be at the week-end. I never thought of Alsa and restarting it. I just used the sound as SuSE set it up on installation. Must read the manual about Alsa. Many thanks again for your, Wolf, and Ed's help. 73 Keith G4JVX
Hello Keith,

I forgot to say that there is a third alternative, you can use the commercial OSS. I got a license for abt $30. http://www.opensound.com/ They have driver for various sond cards, and the driver for AC97 sound with resampling feature too. Hannu is a very helpfull OM, he answered via mail immediately and I got the driver working. His call is OH2GLH and he is very interested in PSK and other soundmodes. You can try the free evalution version, which is running for 30 minutes. and than you have to restart the sound. 73 Wolf, DL2WRJ -- All power corrupts, but we need electricity. (/usr/games/fortunes)

Hello Wolf Thanks for telling me about OSS. I have heard of it, but don't know anything about it. I will try the evaluation version during the week-end and see how that works with my sound chip. 73 Keith G4JVX
