ham radio files missing
Hi all, I was just looking at the package list for SUSE 9.3 PRO on Novell's web site. I cannot find the "Ham radio" packages that are in the rest of the 9.x releases. They are not in the main package list nor are they in the DVD only list. Are they available, or did they get dropped? If not anybody know how to make a tarball into a suseRPM? Jim WA3UQD
Jim Didn't look at 9.3, but in 9.2 there also old files. E.g. node 0.3.0 Node 0.3.2 is out since at least a year. I think suse has no support any more by a ham peter Jim Hartzell wrote:

I need to correct myself. I was looking at the wrong file location. The 9.3 DVD only has the productivity/hamradio/other package group. It does not include any of the others. I was apparently looking at the 9.2 DVD tree. The only hamradio software included on the 9.3 DVD is the PCR1000 control software. My apologies for this confusion. 73's de Jon - KB0RVE On Apr 16, 2005, at 1:32 PM, Jon Thorson wrote:

Hi HAMs! That is true! There are no more HAM packages on the CDs/DVDs. But there are still the install sources at the SuSE servers. As I have read on the german SuSE-HAM list, they are made by DL1BKE, precompiled for 9.3. You can find the packages f.e. at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/ham/9.3-i386 or http://suse.cs.utah.edu/projects/ham/9.3-i386/ or http://search.belnet.be/packages/suse/projects/ham/9.3-i386/ or at serveral other places. The SuSE ftp server may be selected as installation source to ease the installation process. There should be everything you need and was contained in 9.2.

As Thomas wrote, you can find them on ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/ham/9.3-i386 or on any SUSE LINUX mirror that carries the projects folder. You can simply add the directory as a YaST installation source ("yast inst_source") to be able to install them via YaST. Please note that I maintain these package in my spare time and that I currently cannot test them as I don't find the time... Thus, the packages are not official SUSE LINUX packages. The reason for not delivering hamradio packages on the media kit is that most of the programs are quite old. It becomes more and more difficult to even be able to build them. Additionally, many of them won't build on any other system architecture than PC (i386), causing additional load on me and our autobuild team. And finally, the potential costs to react fast and correctly in case of security issues with these packages are too high to justify further support for the packages. Maintaining the packages privately has at least one advantage for me: I have to fix and build the packages only once within the last weeks of the beta phase of the product, opposed to (in some cases) weekly after someone has checked in a new gcc, glibc, QT or KDE update. 73, -- Joerg Reuter DL1BKE http://yaina.de/jreuter And I make my way to where the warm scent of soil fills the evening air. 73, Joerg, Thanks for the info. Many thanks for building the packages, I understand

Hmm, IIRC Xastir has a licence issue... Ah, yes, found it. rotated.c states: /* xvertext 5.0, Copyright (c) 1993 Alan Richardson (mppa3@uk.ac.sussex.syma) * * Permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute this software and its * documentation for any purpose and without fee is hereby granted, provided * that the above copyright notice appear in all copies and that both the * copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting * documentation. It is * provided "as is" without express or implied warranty. */ IMHO (however, IANAL) this is is incompatible to the GPL ("without fee" collides with section 6 of the GPL: "You may not impose any further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted herein.") Thus I feel reluctant to package Xastir, despite Xastir being an excellent program... 73, -- Joerg Reuter DL1BKE http://yaina.de/jreuter And I make my way to where the warm scent of soil fills the evening air.
