it is rather quiet here, unfortunately.
Im a ham since 30 years ago Im running packet/AX-25 since 10 years ago. Now I started to learn LINUX/Suse in order to use it together with amateurradio. The first thing I will try to work with is as an server in APRS, Automatic Position Reporting System. So now - Are there any out there working with similar things, and if, what?
Well, you have the choice between the pure client operation (Xastir) and the mixed server/client operation with aprsd and Xastir. We have a running aprsd server here but nobody finds the time to connect it to the existing packet radio network in DL. While there is some local APRS action spreaded over Germany / Europe it lacks a coordination within a country or international. I would like to see more ham applications being ported to Linux or perhaps newly developed but it seems that most of the hams out there still like their MS-OS better than Linux. Perhaps we can change that in future but it will take some time. A student is writing an application for the SCS PTC-II here at SuSE, just as a first step into the right direction. We are going to support the hamlib project as good as we can. But all that is not enough as long as all of the remaining software only is available for MS.
