[opensuse-gnome] GNOME fallback mode - how to debug?
I updated my laptop to current factory and started GNOME - and only got a box telling me that the default does not work and fallback mode was selected. I've been running compiz on the machine, so why is now fallback mode selected? Any ideas or URLs on how to debug this? A google search was not successfull ;-( Thanks, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@{novell.com,suse.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
~/.xsession-errors
would be a good place to start with... furthermore the driver in usage
might become important. On ATI RV710 and Intel 4500 I've seen no
issues (no experience whatsoever with nvidia.

I've had great experiences with nVidia and Factory using the jobermayr repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jobermayr/openSUSE_Factory ...right up unti recently. The 3.0.0-4 kernel and nouveau driver in M3 installed seamlessly together and gave me a working GNOME Shell. Sadly I upgraded to M5 with kernel 3.1.0-rc5 and (for days) found no corresponding nouveau driver. Lately the version numbers have been baffling me because my kernel is still 3.1.0-rc5-2.2, but the nouveau driver was version 3.1.0-rc5_4-2.2 and wouldn't install; I got fallback mode. Now nouveau is rc6 and I don't see a corresponding kernel update. Try running /usr/lib/gnome-session-check-accelerated (or /usr/lib/gnome-session-check-accelerated-helper, I forgot which one does the hard work) from a terminal, and look at the output.
