[opensuse-gnome] RFC: Slab Properties Dialog
G'day folks! AlbertoP was kind enough to create a properties dialog box for the GNOME Main Menu. He uploaded some screenshots [1] of it and we would like to hear what you think about it. Please post your comments/ideas/thoughts either on the wiki or reply to this email. Once we agree on the layout etc, I will try to implement it (no promises of success though) [2] :-) Thanks, Magnus [1]: http://en.opensuse.org/Redesign_of_GNOME_main_menu_and_application_browser [2]: http://en.opensuse.org/User:MBoman/Slab#Properties_editor -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Anything that makes it customizable has my vote! - Main menu > General tab 1) Hmm... Minimum # of recent apps is 8, maximum # of recent apps is 2. Errmm.. 2) What about favorite apps? - All tabs Would these settings require administrator rights? Or would there be a mix? Some settings users can configure, others only admins can configure? Would these be system-wide configurations or per-user configurations? -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Don't mind the numbers in there :-)
2) What about favorite apps?
What about them? You want to have a maximum for them as well (this setting does not exist today)
- All tabs Would these settings require administrator rights? Or would there be a mix? Some settings users can configure, others only admins can configure?
A user can configure all of these settings and it will be per user. If you want to do system wide settings, Sabayon is your friend. It will allow you to create default value, mandatory settings etc.
Would these be system-wide configurations or per-user configurations?
See above.

That was my point. Shouldn't there be such an option? As well as an option to manage what favorites to add? The only way I know to add to favorites is to drag an application icon from elsewhere. To take it one step further, wouldn't it be nice if users have the option of displaying either favorites or recents? Personally, I have no use for "recents." I never use them except when it is an option within an application, such as OpenOffice or AcroRead. If I had the option to not display recents, that would free up alot more space to store favorites. Also for the general tab, how about an option for whether to display icons or not?

In the App Browser, right click on an app and select Add To Favorites. In the main menu, right click on an app and select Remove from Favorites. What we are trying to do right now is to add a way for the user to change properties without having to go through the gconf-editor. So Enhancement Requests will have to wait a bit (You can always add them to http://en.opensuse.org/Redesign_of_GNOME_main_menu_and_application_browser

Not sure if you can say Minimum/Maximum recent apps to 0.
Also for the general tab, how about an option for whether to display icons or not?
Again, this would be an enhancement to the code, which isn't the primary goal of this particular exercise. As a side note, I can tell you that I did implement this as a test, and it looks strange without them.

I just learned something here. Thank you. :-) Although, for all this time, that wasn't obvious for me. Interestingly, I can add many apps now from the apps browser, using your steps. When I did it a different way, such as dragging icons from panels or desktop, I was only allowed 6 apps. I was under the impression therefore, that there was a hard limit of 6. Wish someone said something before when I was rambling about this topic in other threads before. LOL

Yeah, I've heard several people mentioning that it's not obvious. There's plenty of space that we could make use of to add some brief help text (In the blue area, both in the Main Menu and in the Application Browser) (See the end of this page :-) http://en.opensuse.org/User:MBoman/Slab)

I, and most other GNOME fellows must have missed your ramblings, or we would have jumped in :-) Cheers, Magnus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Some initial comments: 1) Tabs in tabs *eek* 2) Lockdown should probably be left to sabayon 3) Bin file name of existing .desktop files it would rarely (if ever) need to be configured. 4) Don't "fill" with the package so you get weird spacing on tabs with only a couple of items. -JP -- JP Rosevear <jpr@novell.com> Novell, Inc. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

tabs inside tabs are usually a bad idea, so you'd better think about a better GUI. At gnome-control-center we experimented with some layouts, and the only thing that convinced us was to use expanders that get expanded/collapsed when another expander is collapsed/expanded. That is, only one expander will be expanded at a time. -- Rodrigo Moya <rodrigo@novell.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
Gentleman, I beg you to make sure that Sabayon is working fully before wandering off on other issues of property management. The SLAB and APP Browser are not manageable at all in the current state on 10.3. For some reason Sabayon doesn't recognize the changes made in regards to settings available in the "Main Menu" editor and some features of the "lockdown editor". Speaking of the lockdown editor, why on earth does it still reference the "Epiphany browser"? If the topic is to remain one of new features then lets start from scratch and merge all the tools into one! a Sabayon type facility that reads the same settings as what would be included in a new "desktop editor" tool would make the most sense of any energy spent in this direction. So the ability to set the properties from a right click on the menu would help here then.

Yes and no. Why should a user have to create a profile in Sabayon just to be able to edit the properties of Slab? If you want to improve on Sabayon, please do. If you can not help out code wise for whatever reason, please file an enhancement request in bugzilla for the pieces you think are missing. Please understand that I'm doing this on my spare time because I'm 1) Interested in learning GNOME/GTK programming and 2) Slab's code is just about perfect for a beginner like myself to jump in and learn.

Magnus, Yes, right click properties to the menu are indeed a nice future for the gnome. If these right clicks are designed to assist in the removal of other desktop settings tools. I am not asking that the average user be required to use Sabayon for anything, I am just asking that gconf, the "main menu" editor and the "lockdown editor" all produce changes that Sabayon will recognize, Or that a Sabayon style tool be built and updated along side the changes in these tools. I have opened a bug on the inability of Sabayon to recognize SLAB and app browser changes. If I where to suggest an enhancement that you could \ should be looking at, it would be to pull the gconf editor and lockdown editor settings into the main menu editor and remove the other two from the application list, if not from the distro all together. The gnome needs to congeal it's management tools in order to offer the user some sensible, simple management. Starting a forth way to manage the desktop is not conducive to removing adoption impediments or increasing network usage of either SLED or opensuse. The Gnome as presented by both, force me to shut the slab down in order to present a restricted desktop to students. In effect reducing both to level of usability provided in Ubuntu, that's so five years ago. If someone needs inspiration to help with the Sabayon|desktop properties management here is a darn good one. http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Education The KDE portion of this is already done while I am struggling with Gnome settings on my own, Please help Federico finish the Sabayon intergration with the SLAB and appbrowser properties. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
