[opensuse-gnome] Preview of openSUSE Wiki content proposal for GNOME
Hey everyone, Scott (sreeves) and I have been looking at re-organizing some of the GNOME-related content in the openSUSE wiki. We're hoping to have a concrete proposal ready for Thursday. Until then, please go read the draft proposal. We'd love as much feedback as possible. http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Wiki_Layout Feel free to comment back to this mailing list or the Wiki_Layout's "discussion" page. Thanks, -Boyd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Me like :-) I especially like this one: List the goals of the openSUSE GNOME Team * Next 90 days * Future I think the above will make it very easy for people to participate in the project. About your meetings, would it be a good idea to perhaps have an open meeting in IRC before you have your internal meeting? Such a meeting would have a basic agenda, containing items that you will discuss internally and allow the community to give their input. Good work and again... Me like! AFAIK, the meetings Boyd is talking about are public IRC meetings -- Rodrigo Moya <rodrigo@novell.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

some comments:
Do we need to describe the formats of our meetings, like to say who's a moderator/etc.?
I think we just need someone to conduct the meeting, no need to leave the IRC channel moderated. At least for now, since there would be just a few people.
Most Annoying Bugs (Link to http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Bugs)
I added some queries to http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_GNOME_post-10.3_ideas that would be good to have (as well as many others) to that page. It should also contain good information about voting for bugs. It would also be nice if we had a page (Ideas?) for people to add ideas of new features/applications (like http://idea.opensuse.org). Not sure if we want this or just use Bugzilla, but a wiki makes it easier for people to cooperate. -- Rodrigo Moya <rodrigo@novell.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Ops... Not sure why I read the email from Boyd as if he was talking about internal meetings... Please forget about my last suggestion then :-) And I agree, I don't think we need moderation for these meetings to start with.

This would be really cool, but that we would need someone who's dedicated to figure out if ideas are viable or not, and if so, push it to the right people for a decision etc, ie, must be actively commented on (yes/no/maybe) etc.

Somewhat related are the openSUSE Wiki wishlist pages [1]. There's one for GNOME as well [2]. http://en.opensuse.org/Wishlist The idea.opensuse.org site, in my opinion, is hard to discover/view all the ideas. I'd prefer to have a GNOME/Idea_Pool page that would be something like Ubuntu's Idea Pool [3] or Tomboy's Place for New Ideas [4]. These pages are both inside of a wiki and make it really easy for contributors to jot down quick ideas or link to more in-depth pages if necessary. -Boyd [1] http://en.opensuse.org/Wishlist [2] http://en.opensuse.org/Wishlist_Gnome [3] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IdeaPool [4] http://live.gnome.org/Tomboy/PlaceForNewIdeas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

looks good, except that it seems it's just a list of software people want packaged. But I guess we could use that.

yes, that might work better, and for software people want packaged, we can use the wishlist page. -- Rodrigo Moya <rodrigo@novell.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Here's one good use of G:C actually - a staging area for packages from the wishlist (actually mail-notification was in G:C before it was on the wishlist as it happens) for testing etc before integration into the distribution. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org http://usr-local-bin.org GNOME for openSUSE: http://software.opensuse.org/download/GNOME:/ Help end poverty: http://oxfam.org.uk/in -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Overall it looks great to me. * Background/When? - spot on * Proposal I'm not convinced redirecting from GNOME_Team to GNOME is the way to go. I think if you are looking for a visible link, we should add GNOME to the projects page and have the go to http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME and let GNOME_Team just be a list of contributors (Magnus, Alberto why the heck aren't you on the list?). _Team is also used elsewhere in the wiki and there's no need to go against the grain. Linking to the GNOME page is certainly appropriate to do though. Agree with discussion on the page about code of conduct vs guiding principles. Direct bug submission link is great, especially if we could have some for different projects. In the developing (or maybe participating) section we should add a policy around what goes into GNOME:Community. We should mention translating in participating (both upstream in GNOME and for openSUSE). Is the intention that "Participating" is non software engineering and packaging and "Developing" is more coding, bug fixing and packaging? (Maybe we should clarify the categories for what links go where?) For planning, we should add pointers to upstream roadmaps as well. Not sure if Goals or Tasks is a better way to look at it (or if they are separate things somewhat, tasks are done to achieve goals for instance). We should also have a system so people can list themselves as the owner of a task/goal. Can we put up the tasks page first and figure out who's going to get start the various page on there by adding owners :-) ? -JP -- JP Rosevear <jpr@novell.com> Novell, Inc. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
Thanks for the suggestions JP!

I've modified the proposal to make GNOME be the main page with the tabled sections. We can include a link from GNOME_Team -> GNOME and also GNOME -> GNOME_Team.
Agree with discussion on the page about code of conduct vs guiding principles.
Should we have our own GNOME/Code_of_Conduct and GNOME/Code_of_Conduct/Signatures pages and hope that it catches on in the entire distro (to be placed next to the Guiding Principles)?
In the developing (or maybe participating) section we should add a policy around what goes into GNOME:Community.
Added a little blurb in the proposal wiki page.

Added.

Yeah, I was thinking hacking vs. non-hacking. I'm still not satisfied with the current selection of categories. They're still confusing because many of the topics could be easily listed under multiple categories. Anyone have some better ideas?
For planning, we should add pointers to upstream roadmaps as well.
Noted.
Not sure if Goals or Tasks is a better way to look at it (or if they are separate things somewhat, tasks are done to achieve goals for instance). We should also have a system so people can list themselves as the owner of a task/goal.
Perhaps the goals page isn't needed? If there is enough content for a Goals page, I think a tasks page would still be helpful. However, we might be able to combine the tasks page with the openSUSE 11 RoadMap page. Would something like what we did for Tomboy's RoadMap [1] work?
