[opensuse-gnome] Pattern Review Decision Time :-)
Hello, The Pattern Review page[1] has been up on the wiki for a while now and there's been some comments. So we should move along and make some decisions. Note, this is not about packages to be added / dropped from the distro, but rather what packages that should *not* be installed by default. This will benefit us in two way; 1) We don't mess up the menus with applications that most people never use 2) The packages will not be on the 1 CD Install, leaving room for other packages to go in there instead Also, this is not about packages to be *added* to the patterns. There will be a separate discussion about that. The following packages are considered to be excluded from the patterns; pessulus sabayon gnome-commander vcdimager ncpfs pulseaudio-module-jack sox vcdimager zenity pan xournal gftp gnet If anyone has any objections, please let us know ASAP. Thanks, Magnus [1] http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Pattern_Review -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

pessulus sabayon gnome-commander vcdimager ncpfs pulseaudio-module-jack sox vcdimager zenity
Used a lot in scripts, even inside openSUSE but no hard deps, so keep this.

Are these 1 CD media removals or permanent pattern removals (ie not with the DVD either) What about additions? -JP -- JP Rosevear <jpr@novell.com> Novell, Inc. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Both the 1 CD and the DVD will be affected.
What about additions?
At the moment, there's basically no space for additions. We need to remove before we can add. And I would like to see the "Adds" be part of the wishlist packages discussion[1].

IMHO, the current way things are handled for CD and DVD makes it hard to change the patterns since both are affected. This can be bad in some cases (pessulus and sabayon come to my mind, eg). I don't know if it's a good idea, but maybe we could change gnome_basis to mean "what we ship on the CD" and have all other gnome* patterns be extra stuff for the DVD? We'd be a bit more free to choose between moving around packages and removing packages. Or maybe create a gnome_cd pattern that would depend on gnome_basis (is it possible?) and on the other packages we want on the CD. We have opt patterns that could be used I guess. Perhaps it's the way it works today but I *think* I remember that both the 1 CD and the DVD originates from the same pattern. I'm no expert on patterns so including coolo to see if he can clarify.

We should add them to some new patterns that will get on the DVD, IMHO. It can be useful, but not in the 1 CD case.
gnome-commander vcdimager ncpfs pulseaudio-module-jack sox vcdimager zenity
Agree with JP for zenity. (sorry, didn't see your comment about it on the page)
pan xournal gftp gnet
I'd also remove: gnome-keyring-manager pan => to reply to your comment, I don't think most users of this CD will use pan to access the forums, they'll use the web forums. There were other packages from non-GNOME patterns that don't make really sense on a GNOME CD, like xvkbd. How can we handle this? Bring them for discussion on opensuse-factory? It's certainly doable from a technical perspective. I guess we need to have a chat with coolo about it though.

Sure. Didn't know about it.

Yeah, I didn't list it as it will be replaced with seahorse.

Fair enough. Let's see if anyone objects :-)

Yeah, I guess that would be a good discussion on the Factory ml.

they could be on a gnome-admin-pattern or something like that, with other utilities.

xvkbd is needed for tablets, for the login screen and screensaver auth dialog, so not sure if it can be removed from the 1-CD install, since it would make it useless in tablets, AFAICS. -- Rodrigo Moya <rodrigo@novell.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
