[opensuse-gnome] Mentoring in the GNOME team
Hey there, While watching Dominique reserve all of the packages to update for GNOME 3.1.2, I started thinking about mentoring some people who'd like to get involved in the team but don't know how to contribute. We already have several people working in the team doing various things, and that's great! But there might be others who only have half an hour every now and then and think they can't make a difference with that. And that's wrong! Half an hour is more than enough to complete a task. The biggest barrier, though, is that you might have time to learn what you can do in such a short period of time, and how to do it. Hence the idea of mentoring. It's easy to imagine small tasks that could be mentored: update a package, triage bugs, work on maintenance updates, look at features and propose a few ones for next version, etc. And it turns out that we can easily mentor people here. So I'm wondering out loud: are there people here who would like help on starting to contribute? Yes, I would like to help with stuff that is probably more useful than what I've been doing. NM -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Me too. I am not a programmer, but I can download and build things. Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Hi, No it wasn't discussed, I think due to lack of time, but if I recall correct, I believe it will be discussed on this list. NM 2011/6/25 Michael Hill <mdhillca@gmail.com>:

No, unfortunately the meeting went long and this topic was pushed - either to our next meeting or more discussion on this list. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

As Scott mentioned, this wasn't. I wanted to have a small meeting about this last week, but I was away from computers. We can have such a meeting this week, on Thursday 15:30 UTC (usual meeting time), but I think it makes sense to have a time where you, Nerlson, Malcolm and Will can be here. So can the four of you be there at this time on Thursday? Another solution is to just join on irc whenever you have time and ask Dominique (DimStar) or me if there's something that can be done quickly :-) (It's worth pointing out that Malcolm is already going crazy and doing many good things!) I'll be at work, but I can *probably* schedule my lunch around it. I may need help connecting from my phone, but I'll test it in advance. Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
Vincent, et al, I have done some more changes on the layout. It's far from perfect, but I'm tweaking on later. Please check if it's ok. I know the visual metaphor for some icons regarding the content sucks, but I've worked with the existing wiki resources. It also seems that the new wiki has no GNOME:NAVBAR template... I'll see if someone from the wiki team can give a fix so we can have our gimpy navbar like the other sub-projects. NM 2011/6/28 Vincent Untz <vuntz@opensuse.org>:

1/2 an hour every now and then is something I could definitely do, probably more frequently than 'now and then' though, maybe 1/2 an hour 2 or 3 times a week. Totally agree with the learning barrier. You appear to need to commit some serious time to get your head around things like the packaging guidelines or using OBS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
