[opensuse-gnome] Timeshift discussion
Regarding our weekly openSUSE-GNOME meetings, we had a discussion this morning about our regularly scheduled timeshift meetings which occur first of the month at 11:00 UTC. It was agreed that that hour isn't proving effective in getting regular attendance and that we needed to consider a more optimal time, if we even continue timeshifts at all. I've discussed possibilities with several people in different key areas globally to get a feel and am presenting the findings for discussion on this email thread. Please review and communicate your thoughts. Depending on the responses, we may go with the new timeshift next week: Option 1) Eliminate Timeshifting altogether. This would make it very difficult for people in eastern Asia/Australia to attend meetings. Option 2) Create new timeshift for 23:00 UTC. This seems to get the widest support globally. However, India (Our beloved Evo team) would be left out. I discussed with Srag, and they were unable to attend the old timeshift meeting anyway and for them regular time meetings are best. They said they would be comfortable with missing a timeshift meeting. FYI: 23:00 UTC = 6 p.m. for you folks in the U.S. Midwest and Mexico, and late evening (after Rodrigo's television shows) in Europe and 9 a.m. in Sydney, land of the Magnus. I'm in favor of option 2. I think the trick is to find a time where as many non-US parts of the world can join in as possible, without precluding the US, where most of our current and most active contributors are. I think it's unrealistic to expect productive meetings without the US contingent right now. You may have found the best time possible - though I wonder if it might conflict with commute/dinner for many americans. IMO, it'd still be an improvement, though. -- Hans Petter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I'm probably not that much of a Gnome contributor but I usually like to follow these meetings. Just a few thoughts about meeting times in general. 16 UTC -> 18 for me currently Kinda unfortunate because of dinner time (yeah, people with families have dinner at that time here) 11 UTC -> 13 interferes with lunch time all over Europe, so you won't have US and in many cases you won't have Europeans as well 23 UTC -> 01am sorry, this is a bit too late (or too early?) for me. But as said, it's nothing about myself since I miss the meetings anyway because of the above but something to consider, (while I don't have a real solution for that). Would be interesting to have stats for timezones of people attending the meetings/willing to attend the meetings. 11PM UTC is a bit late for Europe, but well, I guess it can be done. What if we all wrote down our location in http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME_Team? It'd be nice to have a reference place to know where everyone is and show the world how global we are. (Goes ahead and does so now...) As for 11PM in your European region, we determined that most of us are late-nighters already. C'mon Vincent, I've seen you up at 4 a.m. French time. :-) But anyway, 11 seemed to be the best time when team members conclude their familial (or spousal) duties. And this is once a month, not every week. I am not certain we'll ever find the magical hour. But it does seem like the original timeshift time proved to be a dismal failure for us. Another thing to point out is that our regular meetings typically occur during business hours for many in the U.S. and Europe. In other words, we possibly have potential contributors not attending meetings because they have jobs, and might be more apt to pay attention to us in the after-hours. We could pull it back one hour as Funky asked in the other email, but that's something for you all to discuss. Remember that those of us who are regular attendees can always submit questions via the wiki, present issues via mailing list, etc. But we have got to find some way to grow our community and not exclude particular regions consistently. -- Bryen Yunashko Proud 2008 Candidate for openSUSE Board -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I just took the liberty to add locations for the people I know where they are based (not sure though if Riggwelter is really in London, but he's in the UK for sure AFAIK :-)

11PM and Midnight are ok for me. I can record the TV shows :-)

I would prefer it at 2200UTC (2300local), dont forget the clocks change in a month's time so UK == UTC and most of Europe == UTC +1. Out of curiousity, as this could affect us in the near future, could you all post when DST changes occur in your country? For the United States it will be first Sunday in November (November 2nd) Thanks! -- Bryen Yunashko Proud 2008 Candidate for openSUSE Board -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I think it's the last Sunday of October for all countries in the European Union (Oct 26th). Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
