[opensuse-gnome] Default IRC Client
Hello, We're currently in the process of trying to decide which application that we should install/use by default for IRC. There was a "discussion" on http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Pattern_Review with regards to this, but I added http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Pattern_Review/xchat for greater clarity. Please head over the to http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Pattern_Review/xchat and discuss your opinions. Please note that *not* installing xchat or xchat-gnome by default does not mean that we are dropping it from the distribution. Thanks, Magnus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I voted for x-chat because it's full featured and it's not overcomplex, in my opinion. However, I'm not troubled about having or not having the IRC client. The issue comes from the greeter/support link, which, if I don't remember it wrong, points to the IRC support channel. If there's nothing that manages urls like irc://..., it's not a good idea. Should be adopted to whichever application we pick but; https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=372232

Sure. I just put this as a reminder because it seemed to work on 10.3. Regards, Alberto -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
All, I should probably have had a deadline in my first email about this but completely forgot about it :-) The deadline will be on Thursdays GNOME meeting[1], so if you haven't voted[2], please go ahead and do so. Looking back to my own experience when I got involved starting with 10.3.... IRC was a new concept for me, and I tried to get it going on Pidgin. Can't remember why it failed exactly, so I let it slide for a bit. Then I stumbled upon xchat and installed that. After that IRC-ing was a piece of cake. However, I do think that in general, most users wouldn't think about needing IRC, so perhaps it should be an add-on rather than default install if space is needed for other things. I've been using xchat for years, but a few months ago I changed to pidgin, and with the inclusion of some plugins, the experience is ok

since we already install pidgin for jabber, novell GW, MSN, etc, we should have, IMO, pidgin as the default app for IRC. One of the things that made me switch to pidgin was for not having to use 2 apps for chatting -- Rodrigo Moya <rodrigo@novell.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Since we have Pidgin with a good IRC client included anyway that should be used as the default client. -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> | Yo.media: 225-590-5961 Swift Change for a Green Future: Kat Swift for President www.VoteSwift.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Hmm, I prefer to think to Pidgin as a basic IRC client for emergencies instead than a daily usage client, because it lacks of many simple things of great help. For example the short commands (/ns, /cs), the function buttons and such. :-) Of course, if it's a space issue, it's another question. OK, I've been using Pidgin (and Gaim before that) for IRC, so I'm going to check out 11.0 later tonight and check out XChat. -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> | Yo.media: 225-590-5961 Swift Change for a Green Future: Kat Swift for President www.VoteSwift.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
