[opensuse-gnome] Banshee in 11.4
Dear all, What is the version of Banshee shipping in 11.4? Are we shipping 1.8.0 or 1.9.1 (Ubuntu seems to be shipping 1.9.1). nm -- nelson marques nmo.marques@gmail.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Yes we will ship 1.8.x since 1.9.x won't be released on time for 11.4 (we are already in freeze). But up-to-date packages are available in the usual places Banshee:Alpha. Yeah, unfortunately openSUSE's release schedule doesn't align with GNOME's (and therefore with Banshee's). Ubuntu will actually be shipping Banshee 2.0 -- which these 1.9.x releases are building up to. I would actually be OK with openSUSE shipping Banshee 1.9.x. At the very least it should ship 1.8.1, a bug-fix-only release, but I can't verify it builds correctly and submit it to Factory because libwebkit hasn't been buildable in Factory for weeks due to a OOM issue[1]. Is there something in 1.9.1 which makes it noteworthy ? -- Sankar P http://psankar.blogspot.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Even if not, I think what Nelson is trying to target is that any other distribution (*buntu for this matter) ships an app which has it's main development in our circle, in a newer version than we do. Dominique, The main issue is that the recent changes on libappindicator and libindicate are not implemented in 1.8.0 (which will be the release version on openSUSE), but are implemented in 1.9.1 (which is the release version on Ubuntu). This takes me to: 1. Backport (no know-how from my side); 2. Ditch functionality; So for me, shipping 1.9.1 would be awesome and would allow me to keep functionality, specially when Banshee is so special for our sponsors and for our user base. My true concern isn't marketing related now, it's really related to functionality of SoundMenu and AppIndicator. NM.

Nelson, Just link to the Banshee:Alpha repo in GNOME:Ayatana. 1.9.x is a development release which is aimed mainly at getting the required bits for Ubuntu to have it as their primary Music app. Yes I know it isn't the *only* enhancement, but it is the main enhancement. I have to rebuild Banshee for MeeGo, so you doing similar is not a big issue. Sure it would be nice to have it OOTB in 11.4 but stability is a big factor ;) At the end of the day, thanks to the OBS it is only a click away for users. 1.9.1 has very useful for me bookmarks feature so I upgraded Banshee on my oS 11.3 install from Alpha repository. I think it is worth to have Banshee 1.9.1 in oS 11.4 -- Kirill Kirillov <>< -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
Sankar, Yeah, there's a catch. Banshee-community-extentions provides two interesting extensions for GNOME:Ayatana packaged software: 1. Indicator support - achieved through libappindicator; 2. SoundMenu integration - recent libindicate changes make 1.8.0 extension crash banshee. I get only two options for GNOME:Ayatana: 1. We break support between SoundMenu and Banshee (I am not really fond of such option), or we backport (I have no knowledge to achieve this); 2. We update to 1.9.1 which should be compliant with new libindicate; That's the reason why I asked. From my side, I would love to offer full integration between Banshee and SoundMenu/AppIndicator, but I'm being really cornered here by options.
