[opensuse-gnome] Moving to Sonar as the default theme
Hi all, It's been discussed on opensuse-artwork [1] and on IRC, so let's just do a final round before moving. We want to move to Sonar as the default theme for 11.2, and do that before the next milestone. It's certainly not perfect right now, but the sooner we get people to use it, the better. If you need the package for testing, you can use: + the packages in home:aaronbockover:opensuse-refresh if you're on 11.1 + the package in home:vuntz:factory-playground if you're on factory (be careful to not take the printer stuff ;-)) FWIW, my package is Aaron's one, with some minor changes. A few questions (most are for Jakub ;-)): + Jakub: is it fine to keep the current (11.1) background? (as well as the grub/bootsplash stuff, I guess). + Jakub: do you want to use the gilouche icon theme by default, or the sonar one? + Jakub: happy if we file issues we have in bugzilla? + all: to add the theme to the livecd, we'll probably need to remove something there. If anybody has an opinion on what we can remove, please share :-) + all: it'd be nice to have a few people do some screenshots of the theme in action so that we can blog about this. I must admit that I am not a big fan of dark color themes. For one thing, it makes things like the Firefox address bar drop-down look not so elegant (other drop-down menus are affected as well). Would it be possible to have a light colored artwork as well? That said, it is not really a big deal for me. I can always change themes myself. I noticed the firefox issue here. But that would really just be a bug in the theme. It's to catch those things that we'd need to switch early on. And fwiw, we definitely won't ship just one theme. So there will most probably be lighter themes ;-) (maybe not looking like sonar, though -- but that's up to the artwork team) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I'm actually liking the dark menus effect. It's a nice contrast for visually-impaired people and well.. older people too. Takes away the "spotlight" effect that so many people seem to think is cool these days. My biggest problem currently with the sonar theme is with the dark bars/panel. It would be nice if the active window were easily a different shade from the other windows. And the dark bars blend in too easily with the panel (I have my panel on top) so it makes it harder to see the difference between active window and panel just above the window. There are some issues with the icons both in panel and elsewhere. But that can be resolved as well I'm sure. -- Bryen Yunashko openSUSE Board Member openSUSE-GNOME Team Member GNOME-A11y Team Member www.bryen.com (Personal Blog) www.planet-a11y.net (Feed aggregator of the Accessibility Community) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

There is a different shade with active and non active windows on mine. I'm going to assume its not enough though ;) Stephen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Definitely not visible to me. Either because I can't see that distinction well enough or because i have my overall screen slightly greyed-down to reduce the spotlight effect. -- Bryen Yunashko openSUSE Board Member openSUSE-GNOME Team Member GNOME-A11y Team Member www.bryen.com (Personal Blog) www.planet-a11y.net (Feed aggregator of the Accessibility Community) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I'm not Jakub obviously ;-), but I'd imagine for right now we'd keep the current artwork, as we're still in the process of gathering ideas for the new artwork (background, bootsplash, etc.). Unless Jakub has some news on this. Other than that, I like the Sonar theme so I agree that it should be put in wide testing as soon as possible. -- Kevin "Yeaux" Dupuy openSUSE Member www.twitter.com/KevinDupuy -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

IANJ either but I agree with this. It seems to me that the colour scheme matches the dark splashes for OOo, GIMP, etc. I have to give Sonar a big +1. It reminds me (not in style but in the way using it makes me feel about my desktop) of when the Smooth engine first got some nice themes and I adopted one for ULB GNOME. I noticed that by default it's set to use the openSUSE-Gilouche icons. I'm actually using the Sonar icons which are gorgeous themselves and match the specific shading better IMHO. Lets get it in the wild so it can get some wider abuse^Wtesting. -- James Ogley, openSUSE Member: GNOME Team and Planet SUSE. riggwelter@opensuse.org http://opensuse.org/GNOME http://planetsuse.org openSUSE: Get It, Discover It, Create It at http://www.opensuse.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
James, I installed the Sonar team and icons. When I switched to the Sonar team, the appearance capplet said that Sonar recommends a different icon set, and asked me if I wanted to change. Did you not get that (it's not a popup, but shows up almost at the bottom of the dialog box) Cheers, Magnus On Thu, 2009-05-07 at 07:21 +0100, James Ogley wrote:

Hi guys. Just wanna ask. Will Gilouche be available also and will be possible to change Sonar to Gilouche? Or will be removed from apppearance? I´d appreciate that you will keep it. -- S pozdravom / Best regards, Rasto -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I must say i don´t like it (light text and dark background). It looks a little Ubuntish - like Dust, or New Wave themes. Drop-down menus could have dark text on the light background. That´s my opinion. -- S pozdravom / Best regards, Rasto -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
