[opensuse-gnome] Video issues
I'm not sure if this is GNOME (GDM, clutter, gnome-shell?) but it started when I grabbed some of the 3.3.92 packages (and maybe a new kernel). Has anyone reported AMD video issues and can I fix them with an update? Since a number of updates on Thursday my laptop very quickly boots into an unreadable screen that is locked up solid. With failsafe mode I'm able to get to Console 2 (the boot messages never finish in Console 1), but a corresponding kernel upgrade seems to have left me without networking, in the current 3.3 kernel or anything back to 3.1 that is still available in my grub menu. To regain my wireless connection, hopefully I just need to track down the latest Realtek firmware rpm and install it from a USB stick. The video problem seems to be kernel-independent, since it exists for any non-failsafe grub entry, not just the new one. The Radeon driver has performed splendidly since just after Desktop Summit, when I was in a similar situation (no video, no wireless). I hope to get back my Internet connection and zypper update out of this mess. I now dual-boot Mageia on this laptop, and the 3.3.92 transition went flawlessy there; unfortunately all of my docs repositories and ssh key work from openSUSE. Is this with Factory? I assume so; I didn't have any specific issues lately. The biggest thing that broke was some mkinitrd bug, but I don't think this is what you're experiencing :/ It's unclear what the issue exactly is, but I'd guess /var/log/messages might have some useful hints. Yes, Factory.

I think maybe this for the video: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=753942 There was a message that the wireless driver failed to request the firmware, so it was disabled. I re-installed from the latest Live iso, with the same result. When I reverted to Build 0154 (2012-02-11) everything worked except GNOME 3.4. I'll wait to see the resolution of the bug before I upgrade. Update: tried this week's Factory Build 314 GNOME LiveCD. Good news A: the Live session again got the Radeon and wireless firmware right and I was able to get online with a fully-functional Live desktop. Bad news: mkinitrd failed when installing to disk (lots of radeon modules listed) and when I finally told it to stop trying, grub failed to install. My mistake was telling grub to try the MBR after it failed on the root partition, making the computer unbootable. Good news B: after today's experiment I was able to restore my trashed system with the 12.1 installer. /opt/gnome was unfortunately on the root partition (which I replace when I re-install) and 12.1 is simply not up to restoring my jhbuild toolchain. Same result last weekend, but it may be fixed now:
One issue fixed: mkinitrd *during installation* finds the firmware directory now, enabling me to boot with working wireless and uncorrupted video. No working gnome shell yet, however, after updating all to GNOME Factory. Fixed with a zypper dup. Now a segfault in gnome-control-center. Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org

No. In addition I'm getting some kind of font corruption because of the video driver (?), where random lines in a list (ie Gmail inbox) or paragraph get blacked out or turn to noise when scrolling. Sometimes highlighting a paragraph will fix the unreadable parts. mike@himon:~> *** glibc detected *** gnome-control-center: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00007f2aef7964d8 *** ======= Backtrace: No working gnome shell yet, however, after updating all to GNOME Factory. Fixed with a zypper dup. Now a segfault in gnome-control-center. Is this fixed? If no, stack trace? :-) No. In addition I'm getting some kind of font corruption because of

Noted. I wouldn't have taken it as patronizing if you'd written, "Do you know about http://susepaste.org/ ?" Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org

And if I had, you would replied, "No, what is it about?", right? :-) . Irrespective of the wording used, you now know about susepaste.org, right? :-) (Don't worry, I had to find out about it in much the same way, except that the first such site "suggested" to me was picpaste.com which I still prefer to use :-) .) Persons that have problem receiving large volume of emails should be subscribed with nomail account to any mail list allowing such. Having outsourced texts will not help if they have interest in particular discussion, as they will have to see (download) backtrace anyway. If backtrace is placed on http://paste.opensuse.org that is just as any other paste media by default temporary with set expiration time, it will be deleted, and consequently, make thread discussion without underlying data useless for later reference. I'll proceed this discussion on opensuse-project mail list. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org
