[opensuse-gnome] HOWTO: Clean Factory Install
Hello, As promised in the last GNOME meeting, here's how to do a clean Factory Install; 1. Download http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/boot/bo... (for x86 and x86_64) 2. Burn it to a CD 3. Boot from CD, select Install, Hit Enter By default, it will go out and grab everything it needs from http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source Be aware of the following; 1. download.opensuse.org should redirect you to your closest mirror server. Depending on the bandwidth and utilization of that mirror, the install can be very slow 2. There is no guarantees that the repository is fully synced, which means that you might get errors half way through an install. 3. Factory is experimental. At any point in time, it might break in any of the following ways; a) Machine wont boot anymore, b) X wont start, c) GNOME wont start etc, so unless you know what you are doing, never install on anything but a lab machine. Personally, I mirror the repo to my local network every so often to minimize the time it takes to install. Hey Cappy... Not long after our meeting yesterday, Coolo posted to opensuse-announcement that Alpha version of 11.0 was available in iso's. Not sure if you saw this one. I had trouble getting the bittorrent to work on Alpha, but I did manage to download the 10.3-11.0 Alpha iso. So which is the better one to work with? The iso's Coolo mentioned, or the factory install instructions you mention? I'm hoping to start this project this weekend on a clean machine that I just finished hardware-upgrading. Thanks, -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

To get started, you'd probably be better of using the Alpha0 iso. Hopefully, you can then upgrade from the internet repo as we move along.

Nice! Happy testing as we say :-)
Thanks,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, the Alpha download via bittorrent is AGONIZINGLY slow. Give me a good old fashioned http or ftp download any old day. :-) At the rate of download speed it is going, I may not be get a full DVD for days. :-(

In case it might help you, I had the slow BT problem too, until I realized that the incoming BitTorrent port was not forwarded from my firewall to my receiving computer. I fixed that, and it's now maxing out my 1Mbit connection. -- Hans Petter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
