[opensuse-gnome] Switching to empathy as default IM client?
Hi, I'd like to discuss using empathy as the default IM client again :-) Last time, we didn't make the switch because it was not totally ready. But lots of work has happened in the meantime and empathy has some cool new features: + VoIP that's working + geolocalisation support (not yet in G:F, need to package a few things first, but will be ready soon) + support for adium themes + desktop sharing: you'll be able to share your desktop with your empathy contacts! Limitations that were blocking this in the past were: + file transfer (implemented now) + a bit buggy (should work fine now) + (?) I'm not aware of any real downside. Opinions? You motivated me to test it again... so $ sudo zypper in empathy $ empathy Starts up.. first thing I see: the tray icon is just a square, gray blob... bleh. Let's try to create an account: Edit, Accounts, adding my groupwise messenger account. enabling it... waiting ... waiting... oh... did I mention waiting? No connection apparently is happening.. at least it does not do anything. Did I do anything crucial wrong? So far I have to use kopete as IM. Pidgin crashe{s,d} on incoming GW messages (did not test for a while. so this might be solved). empathy.. well, see above. Yeah, hrm, so, let's not just use GW as a base to decide ;-) I mean, I don't expect most home users to need GW... Sure, it was not my intention to base the entire decision on this result. Just to share it.

Ok, the connection not working is the certificate in this case I guess... pity. The just gray square as tray icon though should be independent of any used protocol. I'm against it since i found msn and irc protocols broken. I mostly use im client for msn and the empathy backend for msn is a lot worse than pidgin. Another feature missing on empathy is plugins that pidgin as a lot. I'm aware that ubuntu[1] as switched but i found that they miss the most important feature for an IM client, that is working with all the supported protocols. I'm currently testing the new empathy (2.27.3) with the only backend i use (msn). I'm trying to figure if offline msgs and send/receive files work as pidgin. The new features for empathy is impressive, also the notifications are supported and work as expected. Maybe facebook users can have a word since empathy doesn't support this protocol. Oh. That could be a blocker for me. I have a FATE request in to install Pidgin's support for Facebook out of the box in 11.2, so if we switch to Empathy I'd like to see the same thing. It looks like it's on development check http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=573194

The current features are nice, including the adium themes which look awesome and plus is total integrated with the GNOME desktop. Til some day Empathy had no working support for Gadu-Gadu, which is the first popular protocol used in Poland. Currently, 2.26.x feature basic functionality and a Polish guy is working on avatars support etc. The less-basic basic functionality. So Empathy could repeat Pidgin for Polish users in 11.2 if it gets better Gadu-Gadu support or in 11.3/12.0, but then I expect GTK 3.x / GNOME 3.0 revolution and no changes in GG support. -- Best regards, Jakub 'Livio' Rusinek http://jakubrusinek.pl/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

FWIW, Empathy is using telepathy-haze for gadugadu. But yeah, testing is probably needed. And if there's any bug, please let upstream know! The empathy team is really reactive about important bugs. From open conversation window Empathy (via Contact -> Send file) doesn´t allow send a file. Then i tried to receive files from ICQ and MSN Messenger, but nothing happened. Pidgin sends/receives files flawlessly.
Here you are my experiences with Empathy-2.27.2 1) Import accounts doesn´t work. Empathy found Pidgin accounts and tried to import them, but unsuccessfully. Nothing happened. 2) Send and receive files doesn´t work. I tried to send/receive files via msn and icq protocols, from/to ICQ and MSN Messenger under Windows. 3) Empathy doesn´t offer IRC. I wanted to connect to IRC and ..... where is IRC? My opinion. Pidgin is multi-platform software, it is one of the most used instant messenger (besides Miranda, or Trilian). Users using Pidgin on another platform won´t have a problem, if they would like to migrate/try openSUSE. Pidgin is better translated into many different languages (i think more than Empathy, but i´m not sure), is the one of more matured instant messenger. Why do you want to change something, what simply works? And after my experiences i can say it works better. Well, what about it that Empathy supports VoIP, or video? I don´t care. Nevertheless, the most uses VoIP/video communication service in the world is Skype. I vote for Pidgin. Please, keep Pidgin as default IM. Thanks. -- S pozdravom / Best regards, Rasto -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Pidgin is not good. It's not even enough stable to be said it's stable. It doesn't even feature basic functionality of each protocol. Only a bit of every protocol but yeah, they say it can replace ICQ, MSN, Gadu-Gadu, AIM and more. I doubt Linux will get a good and stable IM even in future. Gaim had a development, slow, but it had. Instead of reaching "higher levels", what we've got? Not fully done software, which is suitable to be flushed in the toilet. The only chance is now closed source software or multiplatform software or even software compiled using libwine. Nice, don't you think? If we need to judge, yes, Pidgin over Empathy, but still both use libpurple which is sadly a piece of crap. Better would be if Empathy would use some libs directly to gain protocol support. Galaxium is worth a look. It had few active developers, then development stalled, then new developer started work I think they're going back to work. In future it could be a good choice. InstantBird would be also interesting, if only it wouldn't use crappy libpurple.
Well, what about it that Empathy supports VoIP, or video? I don´t care. Nevertheless, the most uses VoIP/video communication service in the world is Skype.
The truth is that open source software is useless when it comes to VoIP. Skype is a choice, regardless the compatibility with PulseAudio and the Linux support. Hello, I am personally against switching to Empathy at this point as I think it needs more work and testing. Pidgin is more mature, has more features, better protocol support out of the box and lots of plugins (I use at least 8 plugins atm). As someone already mentioned VoIP support is sortof unimportant for many of us, because our mums and friends use Skype and so do we.
