[opensuse-gnome] empathy: Protocol support
Hearing that you discussed to use empathy as default IM client and not pidgin, I tried to use empathy and it offered me to import my accounts from pidgin (great idea but it did not really important everything) - but nothing worked afterwards. empathy did not connect for me to AIM, Groupwise, ICQ or Googletalk. I just did a simple "zypper in empathy". Does empathy support my accounts at all? If I manually go to "Add..", it only offers Jabber, Salut and Google Talk... What do I miss? To get the full protocol support in empathy you need to ensure you have telepathy-haze installed. I have a feeling this is an issue with the spec file not pulling it in as a dep. OK, installing it helped one step - I can now enable the account - but no connect did happen :-( Only googletalk works now, the rest is broken :-( Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I'm afraid I'm having to "vote" against empathy too: I did zypper in empathy telepathy-haze to get the full libpurple support and when I started empathy for the first time, I was prompted to import my Pidgin accounts... Problems: 1) Agreeing to import apparently achieves nothing - no accounts were imported. 2) I have a Facebook account setup in Pidgin/libpurple. Anyone switching from one messaging client to another would reasonably expect all accounts to be transferred but even had point 1 worked correctly, the Facebook account was not listed. My response: to go straight back to Pidgin. Joe User's response on first installing 11.2 and being presented with Empathy: This is broken. -- James Ogley (riggwelter) openSUSE Member GNOME Team and Planet SUSE e: riggwelter@opensuse.org w: http://opensuse.org/GNOME t: @riggwelter w: http://www.planetsuse.org openSUSE: Get It, Discover It, Create It at http://www.opensuse.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Please please please file a bug upstream about this. It will never get fixed if it's not reported.
2) I have a Facebook account setup in Pidgin/libpurple. Anyone switching from one messaging client to another would reasonably expect all accounts to be transferred but even had point 1 worked correctly, the Facebook account was not listed.
Yeah, facebook is known to be not working by default because it comes as an external plugin for libpurple. See http://philliptweedie.wordpress.com/2009/05/18/facebook-chat-with-empathy-in... https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17907 And note that we now have empathy with mc5 in G:F (see last comment in the bug to know why it is relevant). We've discussed this in the past, and we've asked people to try the fix to see if it works, so we could integrate it in the packages. I don't think there was a conclusion, though.
My response: to go straight back to Pidgin.

FWIW, I don't think that Luis opened the bug to switch to empathy by default, so I guess it won't happen for 11.2... Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Don't worry, I'm going to but my point is it's not ready for us to make the default (so I'm glad that wasn't intended to be the result).
Yeah, facebook is known to be not working by default because it comes as an external plugin for libpurple.
I guessed that was why but the average user doesn't care.
And note that we now have empathy with mc5 in G:F (see last comment in the bug to know why it is relevant).

Oh, sure, I agree. I'm just pointing out that the failure is ours. Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

:) Incidentally, the importing bug is fixed upstream apparently: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=585777 -- James Ogley (riggwelter) openSUSE Member GNOME Team and Planet SUSE e: riggwelter@opensuse.org w: http://opensuse.org/GNOME t: @riggwelter w: http://www.planetsuse.org openSUSE: Get It, Discover It, Create It at http://www.opensuse.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Yes i didn't opened the bug mostly because of this issues (regarding to msn, facebook and other protocols). Another issue was if we include empathy we also need to include libpurple and thus telepathy-haze to give the same protocols support. We also need to make sure it fits on the livecd. I guess we better get pidgin-facebook on openSUSE 11.2, improve our social networks support and stick with pidgin. The problem with pidgin-facebook as it needs porting to empathy. See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17907 Luis -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Which account? (if it's the internal groupwise inside novell, then it's unfortunately known to be broken -- something bad with certificates). Hrm. Looking at some upstream bugs, it seems it might be possible to ship whitelisted certificates now... I'll look at that. Just a note too, the groupwise in empathy doesn't work with Novell due to something about certs. Stephen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Andreas, do you disable the installation of recommended package in zypper?
No, I don't. Strange. :-( I installed those now manually but it still only connects to googletalk while pidgin connects directly. At least last time when I tried it could not connect to our GW Messenger due to a self-signed certificate which we're running in our company. The others supposedly should work.
