[opensuse-gnome] I am confused......
And many will comment with, "So tell us something new!" But this time I really am. Two weeks ago or so I installed Gnome3 from the gnome.org site which had gnome3 for openSUSE 11.4 (32-bit) version. Here is what it looked like when told other people in another distro what gnome3 on openSUSE likes like: http://picpaste.com/Gnome3-2A-eP9UEyIv.jpg . I was using it and enjoying it - until a friend told me that there were some new videos posted on YouTube, but I couldn't view them (using Firefox). To cut a long story short, after 4 days of trying to fiddle with my installation to be able to view ANY videos (be they on YouTube or BBC.co.uk) I decided that the best way out was to re-install openSUSE and take it from there. So, this time 'round I installed Gnome from the openSUSE 11.4 DVD (NOT the one from Gnome.org), did all the usual updates, then installed the Gnome3 repos as mentioned in this list, did the "zypper dup" song and dance act......and when I rebooted I was told that I couldn't run gnome3 and that the default gnome would be running instead. Nice, I thought, worked OK for a week+ but now I am told I am in "deep poo-poos". OK, I thought, the usual nVidia driver thing with openSUSE not detecting that I have the ability to run the required graphics. So I install the latest 275 nVidia driver downloaded directly from nVidia just like in the past.....and what do I get? I still have what appears to be the gnome 2.x appearance - but it isn't quite the 2.x thingie because I am not able to hide the top/bottom taskbars, for example. What is most frustrating is that the APPLICATIONS>SYSTEM SETTINGS>SYSTEM INFO is showing me that I have Gnome 3.0.2 installed - which is, to me, obviously total horse-droppings. The bottom line is: anyone know what I could be missing as a setting to be able to see the Gnome3 desktop which I show in the picpaste screenshot above? Or do I have to go back to gnome.org and re-install their version of openSUSE 11.4 with Gnome3 and throw out what openSUSE itself has provided on their DVD + upgrades in Gnome3:/STABLE:/? What you see IS gnome 3, just in fallback mode. So nothing wrong reported.

Most likely .xsession-errors has some pointers to why gnome-shell failed to start. It could be anything rather small... Of course we can also try to guess, which will confuse everybody around. (a good start would be zypper lu -a -r <yourgnome3repo> to be sure zypper dup really got everything (common error: not adjusting the priorities right) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

Probably some X driver issues is the cause if your fallback mode (which you confused for GNOME 2.x) is logged in. If your hardware/driver is not supporting 3d acceleration, GNOME 3 logs into this fallback mode. The fallback mode is _like_ gnome 2.x but does not allow to resize/hide panels. You probably should file a bug stating that 3d acceleration is not working with your card and that it used to work earlier. You can attach /var/log/Xorg.*.log to the bug.

"Gnome-shell" - wazzat? Part of the Crab Nebulae? <Shakes head in wonderous disbelief>... Why isn't something like this gnome-shell automatically installed as part of the "upgrade" to gnome3? Effort is now being expended into "porting" Unity, of all things, to openSUSE but something like having gnome-shell installed by default so that people can use the lovely Gnome3 is ignored.... I don't know if it should be installed by default since you can have GNOME 3 without gnome-shell [it just isn't pretty].
Look at the big picture. I am new user who has heard that openSUSE 11.4 has Gnome 3 - which I would love to try. I also hear that gnome.org has a LIVE CD (which actually is not quite a CD but more or a DVD) which has openSUSE 11.4 configured with Gnome 3. I go to gnome.org and download the CD/DVD, and after seeing what Gnome3 looks like I install it (after spending heaps of time finding how I can do this - but that's another story...) The thought then occurs to me that I might just switch over to openSUSE; I then download the 11.4 Release DVD to install gnome so that I can then upgrade it to Gnome 3 as some people have told me which I can easily could do by selecting the GNOME:/STABLE:/3.0/ and the GNOME:/APPS/ repositories and then by doing some fancy stuff on a command line as root with "zypper dup" stuff. "All really quite simple to do, Fred." And so this "Fred" goes and does all this. But doesn't end up with what he wanted to end up with. Disappointed, he says, "Shove this openSUSE up your Khyber Pass" and returns to his original distro with which he is familiar; openSUSE has now been relegated to the bottom of the cess-pit, not to be trusted again. I am more than sure that I do not need to expand on this broad picture to get the message across. You ask: Did you do the complete procedure as described @ <http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GNOME_3.0> ? to which I respond by mentioning what I just wrote above. Where is this procedure mentioned? The only reference to Gnome3 is what one reads in the IT news sources which point to gnome.org where openSUSe 11.4 with Gnome 3 is available for download as a LIVE CD(/DVD). Sorry for not responding earlier but I've been trying to restore some of my settings in Firefox etc following this 'from-scratch' installation of Gnome3. OK, re your question. It's not an easy question to answer as you know and all I can comment is that doing the single-click installation on the gnome.org site installed all the necessary files so it is very possible to have this missing (and now I found another one a short time ago[$]) file auto installed even when using the zypper approach. Along the lines of what occurs when one is installing openSUSE and configuring it before the first real boot - particularly what I am referring to here is what happens when I go to configure my TV card and the installation process comes up with a Notice stating that "the following X-Y-Z files need to be installed before I can watch TV, and do I want them installed?". I haven't used it (as yet :-) ) but I suspect that the 1-click installation of gnome3 (here: http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME3 ) will also install all the necessary files. The only way which does not produce the full expectations is the "Text Upgrade" method. What you said about news.opensuse.org. Unfortunately, about the only people who would read it would be those such as yourself because you know that it is there and that such information could be contained there. The first place I would have thought that this information would appear would be in something like opensuse-announce - but there is nothing there; or even post information in opensuse-help which almost everybody reads. I have to admit that I have not checked this list - opensuse-gnome - to see if this was announced even here. about the only thing I do remember is the announcement to delete the fcrozat repo. and use the Gnome STABLE for gnome3 files. [$] I have been floundering around trying to figure out how to get adjust some of the gnome3 settings to what I want then to be as I was able to do when I installed gnome3 from the gnome.org site. Hidden amongst the the "news" item you mention above is a gem which states that there is a tweak file available to be able to tweak gnome3. I looked in Software Manager and found that this gnome-tweak file was not installed. It is now installed but I haven't yet looked at it (I wanted to get this response off to you before continuing to play in the sand pit). Basil's point is that 1. He installed openSUSE 11.4 2. He installed the Gnome 3.0 repository, as instructed and he didn't get gnome-shell out of the box, which *is* what Gnome 3.0 is largely about. The fallback mode is... well, a fallback mode. This tripped me, too. I *did* read the instructions in the wiki, and then this happened: - I added the repository. - zypper dup - Wait for about two hours while zypper downloads the Gnome 3.0 repo *AND* all the updates that have accumulated since 11.4 was released (this was a fresh installation, so it needed a bunch of updates already). In those two hours, frankly, the window where I had the wiki page with the instructions was buried very deep in my window stack. I think I even had lunch. When I finally noticed that "zypper dup" had finished, I thought nothing of just rebooting to run all the new stuff - I did not remember that there were extra instructions. So, yeah, I got the fallback mode and had a moment of "why would it not run, given that I already ran it before in 11.3?". When I tried to run gnome-shell by hand, of course it was not installed. *Then* I remembered the wiki page. This is a classic, bad out-of-the-box experience, and we just need to fix it. What would we need to do so that the "zypper ar; zypper dup" dance gets you *exactly* everything you need for a proper Gnome 3.0 installation, with gnome-shell and the metatheme? This reminds me of one thing... we have also NotifyOSD which replaces notification-daemon and has a "Conflicts: notification-daemon". If I may just add this: the 'gnome-tweak' thingie I mentioned, which I found mentioned on the (?)wiki page, is pretty close to useless. I would like to get rid of all the shadows around the drop-down, eg, menus, and I would like to select the fonts I like and their size - but this is not possible in this tweak which I thought would do it for me. Also, I am not able to configure the gnome Terminal which is normally done by right-clicking on the Terminal screen and selecting 'edit profile' (or something :-\ .) Yes, it appears to be "comprehensive" but unlike in KDE or gnome2 there is no way to adjust the anti-aliasing, for example. I know that this last bit is elsewhere but this does not appear to behave as in the past.

I have been doing this for years to get the mc (midnight commander) profile configuration to my liking and so I know about this. But this is NOT available in the installation of gnome3 which I installed as per the way I stated I installed it in earlier posts. It worked fine when I used the gnome.org's gnome3 installation using the LIVE CD/DVD but it doesn't work using the 11.4 DVD from openSUSE 11.4 to install gnome which is then upgraded with the zypper dup method. Today I tried for the third time to install Gnome 3 using the 1-Click Install (Preferred) option on that page you mention above. The page that needs to be advertised more is <http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/CheatSheet> That page is *hard* to find.
Today I tried for the third time to install Gnome 3 using the 1-Click Install (Preferred) option on that page you mention above. And for the third time this 1-Click thingie failed - ie, it did nothing: a file (to run the metadata something) got downloaded somewhere to my HDD but after that nothing happened, zilch, zero :-( .
It downloaded a ymp file [I assume] which is saved where ever your browser has been configured, by you, to save files. For whatever reason you browser does not associate ymp files with Yast. Are you using Firefox or the disease that is Chrome [where it can be assumed file associations won't work worth a crap].
And for the 3rd time I had to install gnome 3 using the command line approach.
Personally, I consider this the preferred approach.
(BTW, in all cases I did a clean install of 11.4 with the gnome DE, updated this in the normal way (Yast Online Update) after which I went to the above URL to install gnome 3. And I am using the 32-bit version, which may make a difference although I don't see why it should.)
And I take it from this that there is a problem? I've installed numerous times, using the zypper method, and the only problem I've seen [and still see] is that the network manager is not available in the panel. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

My god! Where did this come from?! You betcha that it is hard to find - didn't even know it existed until you mentioned it just now! (What a weird way to get people to learn how to use a new DE :-( .)

I am using Firefox, and have been since it first appeared. OK, how do I get FF to recognise ymp files and associated them with Yast?

No, no problems really - except that I cannot find were to set the default applications like browser and e-mail client; or get rid of the shadow around the drop-down menus.

Out of curiosity (and yes, of course you are not supposed to know... all good?): do you have the package yast2-metapackage-handler installed? This is what should normally take care of the ymp files. Did you specify to automatically safe files without prompting to 'open' or save? Any download manager in between, which takes care of downloading the .ymp file? Many options together can lead to the issue.. it's difficult to say just like this. Yep. version 0.8.11-2.1

By clicking on the 1-click install I get the message "open with YaST Meta Package Handler (default)" to which I simply click on OK. I did notice that the ymp file was going to be downloaded from a mirror, mirror.optus.net. Perhaps this is where the problem lies?

Actually, you hit the jackpot with that one! When Frederic wrote the page, he intentionally put the download of the .ymp file to widehat, instead of download.o.o, as not all mirrors server the ymp file with the correct mime type. Sadly, this got changed, which added a lot of frustration on users and maintainers side. Sorry for that! It has been identified with your help as being an error and being fixed by Frederic shortly after. So hopefully the wiki page is offering the ymp file again from widehat, not from download. Good to hear. I'll be installing KDE with Gnome 3 on my wife's computer tomorrow so I'll have the pleasure of experiencing this change for myself :-) .
