[opensuse-gnome] VOTE: Firefox Beagle Plugin - Urgent
Hi all, When we do a default GNOME install, we will also get a Firefox plugin for beagle to index the online history. I like to know if people want this to be automatically installed or not. So, can you please reply to the list (ctrl+l in evolution) and let us know if this firefox plugin should be installed by default or not. I wonder if there should be another option "Installed but disabled"? I actually have mine installed but I always disable the plugin. I'd be more interested in hearing about use cases as to whether this plugin (not a referendum on Beable itself!) is useful or not. Until then, I don't think I can make a fair and judicious vote on the matter. I disable it but that doesn't mean I have given it a fair observation of how it is used. And I'd rather vote for how it benefits users at large, not whether I have a personal opinion/preference on my own desktop and a knee-jerk reaction everytime I see the word "Beagle." -- Bryen Yunashko openSUSE Board Member GNOME-A11y Team Member www.bryen.com (Personal Blog) www.planet-a11y.net (Feed aggregator of the Accessibility Community) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

I use it quite often ot index all my 'bugzilla' entries all over the places. Like knowing I 'browsed' through different bugs, but not having a clue where it was, still knowing the 'topic' ore or less, helps me find the ticket rather quick. Beagle and all those desktop searches are an additional too to learn, but they can serve quite good once you get used to them. For me, Firefox's "awesome bar" does the same for me. I just start typing something that I remember from the title of a bugreport and the URL of the bugreport pops up.

I'm sure we have an off-topic ML somewhere... Please send your emails there in the future :-) But more seriously, if you don't have an opinion or if you are neutral, it is ok and understandable. I still like to see how the Yay/Nay sayers vote and make the decision from there unless we have some really strong objections against that? That's precisely my point. A simple yay/nay doesn't really tell the story. I've now seen votes on both sides and frankly, it doesn't mean anything to me because I have no clue why people voted for or against. Surely, we're better than that and make informed decisions about what our defaults will be when ultimately delivered to our users than that. I don't think we should force people to say why or why not they want the plugin. If we would ask, then it should be an anonymous vote on some independent website. So please, let's keep it simple so that people can just say yay/nay? If we don't install it by default, it is as easy as 1-2-3 to install, and if we do install it by default, the same simplicity applied to get rid of it. I vote for: Don't Install by default. I was too tempted to side track the discussion saying 1) "Please install DownThemAll" 2) Can we use google docs survey feature in future ? (or survey.opensuse.org ? ) So there are less mails to follow. I'm not too sure that voting is the vest way to judge whether something should be kept or not from the patterns. Particularly since Beagle is a hot-button issue around here (though this isn't Beagle, for those unaware, this is a small plugin in Firefox that doesn't really affect anything of you're not running Beagle). Probably I shouldn't influence people. But I think people should be aware of two important issues currently happening with the Beagle Firefox plugin: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=532107 beagle indexer firefox plugin incompatible with Firefox 3.5 "Private Browsing" mode Summary: Beagle will _always_ index or at least save away the pages you visited w/o even thinking about Firefox' privacy modes. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=533783 beagle-firefox flooding $HOME Summary: If you ever used beagle or just happen to have a ~/.beagle directory the addon will always save your visited pages there especially if beagle is not running and therefore nothing wipes that data ever.
