There's a zoom level in the new menu. It's not really fine-grained, but you can at least reduce the size a bit.

This, too, works for windows, but does not appear to work on the desktop itself. So, how can I reduce the size of icons on the desktop -- and specifically the size of folder icons which is twice or thrice (in terms of area) of what it used to be in all earlier versions of Gnome 3?
