Upon further investigation, this seems to be a problem that *only* happens when oxygen-gtk is used as gtk-style, and it does not seem to matter whether gtk2 or gtk3 are used. This, in turn, suggests that the problem might not be a Gnome problem after all, since oxygen-gtk is a KDE project. Hmmm... It seems curious though that oxygen-gtk is the only theme that breaks Emacs in this way. I'll have a further look around!
