Still trying to debug the issue. Reading this thread: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638924 made me think that the "Unregistered Authentication" error that I get might be due to X crashing. So I played the same game with looking at the log at every step, but this time I focused on the Xorg log. When the gnome shell crashes, this is what I see: 341a342,350
[ 312.083] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "DFP-0:nvidia-auto-select" [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): ACPI: failed to connect to the ACPI event daemon; the daemon [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): may not be running or the "AcpidSocketPath" X [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): configuration option may not be set correctly. When the [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): ACPI event daemon is available, the NVIDIA X driver will [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): try to use it to receive ACPI event notifications. For [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): details, please see the "ConnectToAcpid" and [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): "AcpidSocketPath" X configuration options in Appendix B: X [ 312.138] (II) NVIDIA(0): Config Options in the README.
I will continue debugging and keep you updated.... Valerio On Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 3:24 AM, Valerio Mariani <valerio.mariani@gmail.com> wrote:
Dear All,
after the upgrade to Gnome 3.8, in my home desktop system I started to notice a serious problem when switching users.
If I log in as a user, then 'Switch User' to allow another user to login, and then switch back to the first user (either by selecting again the 'Switch User' entry in the menu, or going to the correct tty with the keyboard), I see a message saying that something went wrong, that all extensions have been turned off, and offering me to logout (I am not using any extension).
I tried to diagnose the source of the problem, and it seems that GDM is crashing. I see the following messages in /var/log/messages (notice the failed asserts for xdm):

I observed this error both when using the proprietary nvidia driver and the open source nouveau driver.
I also noticed that the session for the first user opens on tty7, but the one for the second opens on tty2, not on tty8. Is this ok?
I would really like to get to the bottom of the problem as user switching is essential for me on the desktop. Please let me help if I can provide more information to help with the debugging Thank you for your help
