Hi,
I'd like to discuss using empathy as the default IM client again :-) Last time, we didn't make the switch because it was not totally ready. But lots of work has happened in the meantime and empathy has some cool new features:
+ VoIP that's working + geolocalisation support (not yet in G:F, need to package a few things first, but will be ready soon) + support for adium themes + desktop sharing: you'll be able to share your desktop with your empathy contacts!
Limitations that were blocking this in the past were:
+ file transfer (implemented now)
In which one version is implemented?
+ a bit buggy (should work fine now) + (?)
I'm not aware of any real downside. Opinions?
Vincent
From open conversation window Empathy (via Contact -> Send file) doesn´t allow send a file. Then i tried to receive files from ICQ and MSN Messenger, but nothing happened. Pidgin sends/receives files flawlessly.
Here you are my experiences with Empathy-2.27.2 1) Import accounts doesn´t work. Empathy found Pidgin accounts and tried to import them, but unsuccessfully. Nothing happened. 2) Send and receive files doesn´t work. I tried to send/receive files via msn and icq protocols, from/to ICQ and MSN Messenger under Windows. 3) Empathy doesn´t offer IRC. I wanted to connect to IRC and ..... where is IRC? My opinion. Pidgin is multi-platform software, it is one of the most used instant messenger (besides Miranda, or Trilian). Users using Pidgin on another platform won´t have a problem, if they would like to migrate/try openSUSE. Pidgin is better translated into many different languages (i think more than Empathy, but i´m not sure), is the one of more matured instant messenger. Why do you want to change something, what simply works? And after my experiences i can say it works better. Well, what about it that Empathy supports VoIP, or video? I don´t care. Nevertheless, the most uses VoIP/video communication service in the world is Skype. I vote for Pidgin. Please, keep Pidgin as default IM.
