It points to snapshot of development version of opensuse, so user could easy switch between alpha2 and alpha3 just updating repository and run zypper dup. Use Case: User A want update from 11.1 to 11.2. Now he must update manually all repositories and run zypper dup. By default stable lags behind by about 1/2 a release cycle (ie 4 months), for the oblivious and those who can't afford to run into early adopter bugs or just need to avoid frequent updates; current being the freshest supported release.  Then the more enthusiastic can find the problems, and not all users are hitting forums & mail list at same time.
