Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: The repair feature was an unique selling point for openSUSE and SUSE based products. It gave users a feeling of reliability and confidence. It is absent in 11.3 Discussion: #1: Axel Braun (docb) (2010-12-18 15:30:16) Yes, recreating the repair function would be great. Just had the case a an invalid windoze installation corrupted the mbr, so how to re-install grub? With the repair function it was in easy, without repair in 11.3 it is nearly impossible.... And by the way, Fate #308679 is not visible to normal users #3: Jean-Daniel Dodin (jdd) (2011-05-05 10:13:33) (reply to #1) see https://features.opensuse.org/312301 #2: Christopher Yeleighton (yecril71pl) (2011-03-07 10:48:33) Please reinstate the System Log in YaST2 at least. #4: Jean-Daniel Dodin (jdd) (2011-05-05 10:18:08) could we add to the rescue system the very simple script: chroot_old_install.sh: ................... cd /mnt mount --bind /sys sys mount --bind /proc proc mount --bind /dev dev chroot . ................... this would make debugging much easier! #5: Sławomir Lach (lachu) (2011-05-07 11:26:16) (reply to #4) Please, check code of my script: http://slawek.lach.art.pl/yast2inLive.sh It runs a Yast from broken system. It also copy firmware for ethernet/wifi controller to allow connecting via internet. I have used this script many times to repair broken installation of unstable release. #6: Roman Bysh (romanator) (2012-08-01 18:33:28) Update How would this help for users using Grub2? I would like to the Yast2- repair module brought back. It saved my system. I would recommend removing the package check and just include a repair for Grub1 and Grub2. Possibly include a fix Grub "automagically". And include a fsck if possible. #7: Roman Bysh (romanator) (2012-08-01 18:41:07) Pleased update this request for openSUSE 12.x and higher. They will request a maintainer. #8: fn ln (gwdg37) (2012-08-24 19:22:39) Every LIVE or Install medium should maybe have a TOOLBOX with choices like... a few ideas Toolbox ======= - Rescue (CLI interface) - Boot installed partition - Verify a given installation - show report with save option - repair options menu - according to problems found - standard repair menu - Install boot loader -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/310899
