[openFATE 306473] Support KDE initiative to build a brand together
Feature added by: Klaas Freitag (kfreitag) Feature #306473, revision 1, last change by Title: Support KDE initiative to build a brand together openSUSE-11.2: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Mandatory openSUSE-11.3: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Mandatory Requested by: Klaas Freitag (kfreitag) Description: Please carefully read http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2009/06/building-brand-together.html Aaron suggests to start combined efforts up- and downstream to create a strong brand for FOSS. Aaron outlines the overall goal: "The desired result is the ability to build a visually identifiable F/OSS desktop brand together , one that fits nicely with your brand as well. This way people can continue to say, "Oh hey, that's $COMPANY $NAME Linux" while giving the human population half a chance to build a relationship with F/OSS itself as a visually identifiable thing. In short: the goal is to increase our net effect in the market by working together." For that, the KDE project is starting to offer a service that helps creating a brand that is fine for both openSUSE and the KDE project. I think we should be an early adoptor here. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/306473

Feature changed by: Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) Feature #306473, revision 25 Title: Support KDE initiative to build a brand together openSUSE-11.2: Done Priority Requester: Mandatory - openSUSE-11.3: Unconfirmed + openSUSE-11.3: Done Priority Requester: Mandatory Requested by: Klaas Freitag (kfreitag) Developer: (Novell) Description: Please carefully read http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2009/06/building-brand-together.html Aaron suggests to start combined efforts up- and downstream to create a strong brand for FOSS. In short: the goal is to increase our net effect in the market by working together." For that, the KDE project is starting to offer a service that helps creating a brand that is fine for both. First step is offering a frame for wallpaper design. openSUSE and the KDE project would bring openSUSE's logo and/or color scheme into KDE's default wallpaper(s). I think we should be an early adoptor here. Discussion: #1: Andreas Demmer (ademmer) (2009-06-08 16:19:33) Pinheiro did a great job in the new default "Air" Plasma theme for KDE 4.3. IMHO it looks much more attractive then openSUSE's default Aya theme. I suggest we should take the offer that they would do a openSUSE branded KDE (e.g. geeko on the start button and the like). This would not only help building the KDE brand but appeal to be designed with much more love than the default openSUSE 11.1 KDE look was. Plus, jimmac could concentrate his efforts on Gnome. #2: Thomas Thym (ungethym) (2009-06-19 18:14:09) +1I think this is a great oppotunity to save ressources. We don't have to invite the wheel twice and in my opinion the KDE team does fantastic design work. If the openSUSE brand is placed in a good way we don't loose anything, but gain a lot. #3: Will Stephenson (wstephenson) (2009-07-14 14:44:10) I have met up with Jimmac and Nuno Pinheiro from KDE's artwork team on this. We are ready to agree which elements to begin with. The initial scope is desktop session wallpapers but Nuno is willing to provide other wallpapers so that the branding fits in with other distro look and feel. #6: Stephan Kulow (coolo) (2009-09-07 14:01:37) (reply to #3) I saw theme and screenshot, so I set this to done for 11.2 #7: Stephan Binner (beineri) (2009-09-11 09:56:33) (reply to #6) Does it make sense to keep this open (as reminder?) for openSUSE 11.3? #4: Markus K (kamikazow) (2009-08-09 15:51:10) What's wrong with KDE's default wallpaler but with a greenish taint to match openSUSE? #5: Stephan Kulow (coolo) (2009-09-07 14:01:13) (reply to #4) nothing, but someone had to do it. #8: Robert Davies (robopensuse) (2009-12-01 01:41:33) Why's this marked 'done' for 11.2, but 'unconfirmed' for 11.3; the branding has been popular in review and in forum, perhaps the only drawback I see is using KDE 4.3.1 + backports rather KDE than 4.3.3 which seems more solid to me. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/306473
