The user will install openSUSE using DVD, on DE selection he will able to select "other DE" and then LXDE from that list Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Because that will attract more user, and will allow you to provide an openSUSE version able to running on 128MB of ram with X server running Discussion: #1: Stephen Kellat (skellat) (2009-09-10 22:51:13) In light of the whole debate over KDE, I do not see how this is appropriate at this time. #2: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-09-10 22:56:54) (reply to #1) 1st) of all that was "important" not just "desirable" for me :), i wonder to know why you changed that ;-) 2nd) excluding the "IMHO" wasting of time behing KDE default or no, lxde wont be a sobstitute fro gnome or kde that are the major DE, but it want to provide a better user experience to users with old pc's, that now have to use xfce. lxde is lighter and with an easier UI even for linux newbie #3: Kirk Kimmel (omf) (2009-09-15 11:01:55) I like the idea of being able to provide a slimmer solution over xfce without having to resort down to just having twm or fvwm installed. The real question is given all the packages currently on the install DVD what would need to be added to create a LXDE pattern? #4: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-09-15 11:31:47) (reply to #3) yes one more pattern will be needed, but it's already available on X11: lxde repo. I think that on 11.3 we can not worry about "no more space on the media" because all LXDE packages are very small and lots of space wil be freed by new noarch packages coming from new RPM. #5: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-09-16 11:45:41) in order to have a better LXDE support (even if that will be reject, and i really hope not) i submitted 2 osc request: 20489 and 20490 (one for bluez-gnome and one for NetworkManager-gnome) #6: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-09-21 11:34:19) (reply to #5) the feature https://features.opensuse.org/307769 is also related to that one. #7: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-10-24 19:42:20) new submitreq in order to solve that feature: created request id 23068: "just added LXDM support in /etc/init.d/xdm, the diff here: http://pastebin.com/f352cc474 , such file is into xdm.tar.bz2, just few infos about lxdm here: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=531 . Accepted and SR'ed also for openSUSE:Factory. #9: Serge Stroobandt (on4aa) (2009-11-18 20:31:05) Well, IMHO the whole KDE debate really was a bit over the top as was adding a buggy KDE 4.1 to OpenSUSE 11.1. Conversely, not including LXDE as an install option in OpenSUSE 11.2 is really a missed opportunity. Please, allow me to explain brievely why. What makes OpenSUSE so great is the fact that it offers a lot of server packages directed by YaST as well as a choice of desktop environments. With the advent of European CO2 taxing -I am not in favour because A| G0re is a NW0 hoax- and higher electricity bills, people will have to switch to green computing whether they like it or not. This will be especially true for Small Office - Small Home servers that are kept switched on all the time. I recently built a SOHO server around a Jetway board with a low-powered VIA C7 CPU. OpenSUSE with LXDE would be the ideal combination for such a system. #10: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-11-18 20:55:54) (reply to #9) this feature has not been evaluated on 11.2 mainly because it has been "published" to late. another reason is that lxde packages needs some code fixing and some security checks that i'm not able to perform. hopefully in the next months that will be done upstream or we will have 8 months to do it by your own. i would like any way to push SuSE "bosses" to really consider that request that will allow to run openSUSE also on obsoletes machines where xfce is either too heavy. #11: Lee Matheson (oldcpu) (2009-12-05 13:16:17) I think it a good idea to add LXDE as an installation selection. It could be included in the early milestone releases of 11.3 as a selectable install option under "other" and if any major bugs can not be addressed in time before 11.3 release, there is always the option to remove the menu selection (from "other" ) immediately prior to the first Release Candidate. But I believe that won't be necessary and the community will warmly embrace LXE. #12: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-05 13:40:28) (reply to #11) i agree... do you think should i submit the packages to factory? Coolo what do you think about it? an other thing, LXDM is coming out so nicely. it's lightweight and goodlooking, probably it can be used as default LM in replace of XDM when you install xfce of "minimal X system" + #13: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-05 19:25:58) (reply to #12) + i opened a bugzilla enhacement bug here: + https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561145 -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/307729

Feature changed by: andrea florio (anubisg1) Feature #307729, revision 30 Title: Officially Provide LXDE openSUSE-11.3: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: andrea florio (anubisg1) Developer: andrea florio (anubisg1) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: LXDE stands for L ightweight X 11 D esktop E nvironment. It is an extremely faster, performing and energy saving desktop environment. It is maintained by an international community of developers and comes with a beautiful interface, multi-language support, standard keyboard short cuts and additional features like tabbed file browsing LXDE actually is lighter than xfce and it's stable and mature enought to stay into openSUSE. Actually big distros like mandriva already provides LXDE. Mandriva for example allow you to install LXDE from DVD media. The only "problem" that LXDE has is the Login Manager, xdm is quite ugly and SLIM looks to be no more developed. That "problem" will be hopefully fixed in few weeks, infact they are now developing their login manager, LXDM as you can see here: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=531 Will be wonderful to have LXDE officially supported by openSUSE and why not, even available into the installation media. more infos: http://en.opensuse.org/LXDE http://lxde.org/ Use Case: The user will find LXDE packages into OSS repository, He will be able to install it using patterns. This req is related to openfate feature #307729" #8: Stefan Dirsch (sndirsch) (2009-10-24 21:19:48) (reply to #7) Thanks. Coolo what do you think about it? an other thing, LXDM is coming out so nicely. it's lightweight and goodlooking, probably it can be used as default LM in replace of XDM when you install xfce of "minimal X system" #13: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-05 19:25:58) (reply to #12) i opened a bugzilla enhacement bug here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561145 #14: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-11 20:56:56) the first submitreqs have been sent in particular: submitreq #26169 (gpicview) package presented with this mail to list: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2009-12/msg00395.html submitreq #26240 and #26275 (lxmusic and xmms2): http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2009-12/msg00465.html submitreq #26278 (menu-cache): http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2009-12/msg00487.html #15: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-12 16:18:37) (reply to #14) submitreq #26285 (lxterminal) #16: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-12 17:08:20) (reply to #15) submitreq #26286 (beaver) submitreq #26287 (galculator) submitreq #26288 (gmixer) submitreq #26290 (lxtask) new submitreq coming soon #17: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-13 16:35:03) (reply to #16) submitreq #26342 (nuoveXT2-icon-theme) the default lxde icon theme #18: Alberto Passalacqua (greengeeko) (2009-12-13 20:45:18) It seems a good idea :-) #19: Hedge Hog (hedge_hog) (2009-12-13 21:23:40) Previously unmentioned usecase: A computer, laptop or desktop, with more than one desktop active, (switching between with clt+f7/f8), or remote NX connection. Feature changed by: andrea florio (anubisg1) Feature #307729, revision 40 Title: Officially Provide LXDE openSUSE-11.3: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: andrea florio (anubisg1) Developer: andrea florio (anubisg1) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: LXDE stands for L ightweight X 11 D esktop E nvironment. It doesn't have to be limited to low spec, it can be just for a user that prefers a faster DE, speed is an important issue at the moment. #21: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-14 08:35:35) (reply to #20) yes i completly agree, in addition you have no idea about the many improvments made since i release the LiveCD, there is a new one in the oven right now :) #26: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-22 10:10:34) i wonder if anyone will chage the status from Unconfirmed to Evaluation since the packages has been submitted and some of them already accepted. #27: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2010-01-08 19:27:18) only xmms2 has not been accepted yet (so lxmusic cannot be built) but everything else is there... :D only lxdm has not been submitted yet because i'm waiting a stable release + #28: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2010-01-13 14:42:49) (reply to #27) + and it arrived. + submitreq #29420 is lxdm -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/307729

Feature changed by: andrea florio (anubisg1) Feature #307729, revision 42 Title: Officially Provide LXDE openSUSE-11.3: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: andrea florio (anubisg1) Developer: andrea florio (anubisg1) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: LXDE stands for L ightweight X 11 D esktop E nvironment. This req is related to openfate feature #307729" #8: Stefan Dirsch (sndirsch) (2009-10-24 21:19:48) (reply to #7) Thanks. Coolo what do you think about it? an other thing, LXDM is coming out so nicely. it's lightweight and goodlooking, probably it can be used as default LM in replace of XDM when you install xfce of "minimal X system" #13: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-05 19:25:58) (reply to #12) i opened a bugzilla enhacement bug here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561145 #14: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-11 20:56:56) the first submitreqs have been sent in particular: submitreq #26169 (gpicview) package presented with this mail to list: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2009-12/msg00395.html submitreq #26240 and #26275 (lxmusic and xmms2): http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2009-12/msg00465.html submitreq #26278 (menu-cache): http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2009-12/msg00487.html #15: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-12 16:18:37) (reply to #14) submitreq #26285 (lxterminal) #16: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-12 17:08:20) (reply to #15) submitreq #26286 (beaver) submitreq #26287 (galculator) submitreq #26288 (gmixer) submitreq #26290 (lxtask) new submitreq coming soon #17: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-13 16:35:03) (reply to #16) submitreq #26342 (nuoveXT2-icon-theme) the default lxde icon theme #22: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-15 15:38:28) (reply to #17) submitreq #26623 (lxmenu-data) #23: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-15 21:09:36) (reply to #22) submitreq #26635 (lxappearance) submitreq #26636 (lxshortcut) submitreq #26637 (lxsession) submitreq #26650 (lxrandr) new submitreq coming soon i hope to finish requests in this week #24: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-17 08:57:50) (reply to #23) submitreq #26889 (lxsession-edit) submitreq #26837 (lxinput) submitreq #26839 (lxlauncher) submitreq #26876 (lxpanel) submitreq #26893 (openbox) #25: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-12-22 10:09:47) (reply to #24) obconf submitreq #27386 pcmanfm submitreq #27387 leafpad submitreq #27388 packages already accepted: beaver gpicview nuoveXT2-icon-theme lxpanel lxlauncher lxappearance lxsession-edit openbox #18: Alberto Passalacqua (greengeeko) (2009-12-13 20:45:18) It seems a good idea :-) #19: Hedge Hog (hedge_hog) (2009-12-13 21:23:40) Previously unmentioned usecase: A computer, laptop or desktop, with more than one desktop active, (switching between with clt+f7/f8), or remote NX connection. If the users desktops are using kde _and_ firefox for intensive/creative browsing then 1GB of memory is stretched. Throw in work convenience and apps and 2GB is a tight fit. While firefox is the main culprit, then KDE (4.2), in terms of memory hogging, the choice is: a) Find a better/'no-worse' browser that plays nice with KDE+apps b) Find a better/'no-worse' desktop that plays nice with Firefox+apps In my case the choice was to switch to LXDE. Of course this is user specific - I needed Firefox's functionality more than KDE's functionality. So _please_ expand the use case horizon from "low-spec'd hardware", to include "high-spec'd user applications". #20: Barry Nichols (barry_nichols) (2009-12-14 02:23:29) On other distros, LXDE is a very good option, it looks good, is lightweight and is stable.
