We need a database. And, having a database means that the database must be updated at each time the kernel is updated. Alternatively, checking /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD- Audio-Models.txt might work (but unreliably). But, the list depends on the codec chip which isn't exposed to PCI space. Thus, you don't know it unless you load the driver. So, it's a chicken-and-egg problem.
