[New: openFATE 316538] Gnome 3.6
Feature added by: David Shuman (pasha19) Feature #316538, revision 1 Title: Gnome 3.6 Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Desirable Requested by: David Shuman (pasha19) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: I am new to Gnome. There are many things I like about the new menu structure. However, I believe there are some things that could be changed for improvement. First the mouse movement after clicking activities is excessive for two items. The "sometimes running application bar" at the bottom could not be arranged to make mouse movement requirements be further. Likewise the pullout workspace menu is at a distant location in term of the mouse. The first suggestion is that the items in the top menu line have two states hovered and clicked. The hovered state shows status and directly related control panel options. Clicked includes more detailed options. Hovered displays disappear when the mouse is no longer over any of the displayed options or whenever an option is clicked. Using this as a premise hovering over activities could display either of the following 1) The workspaces vertically immediately below and the "sometimes" running applications to the right with names displayed when hovering over an ICON like the most recently used icons. Both bars are TOP/DOWN arrangement. 2) a horizontal arrangement (left to right could also limit mouse movement). As a further refinement both the workspaces and sometimes open applications could appear in the same vertical list with submenus like open windows for workspaces or attached removable volumes could appear when hovering over the appropriate entry in the first list. Clicking on activities shows the menu content without the need for the menu selector icon in the recently used area. The date and other icons excluding name should probably display the current click content on hover. The control panel, logoff and power off should be click items. An expanded notification item information should appear on hover. The date could include the yast menu as it's clicked option. Since the bottom of every workspace has now been cleared (at least to my understanding) each workspace should have an easily configurable favorites area (whether it floats (up and down) or is static should probably be optional). One workspace could contain work executable icons, another recreation executable icons with two menus for additional options. Now the current favorites/most recently used side menu can be reserved for only recently used items. The above is merely a suggestion. Thanks for the opportunity to make such a suggestion. As you are the designers and implementers of course any final decision is left to you. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: I believe this would make utilizing the interface more efficient for most users in the long run with less extraneous mouse movement. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/316538
