[openFATE 308078] Package Greenstone Digital Library System
Feature added by: Stephen Kellat (skellat) Feature #308078, revision 1 Title: Package Greenstone Digital Library System Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Stephen Kellat (skellat) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: Greenstone is a digital library system created by a team at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. The system was developed in partnership with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO. At present it is not packaged for any distribution whatsoever. To broaden the appeal of openSUSE to educators who already can install virtual learning environment from Moodle, Greenstone could be packaged for installation. Use Case: 1. Educator using openSUSE education custom spin is able to comply with an administrator's wishes to create a digital library with few headaches. 2. A development team seeking a way to archive project communications for posterity does not have to turn to Google Groups to do it. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Right now the installation tool for Greenstone requires a fair degree of proficiency in administering your own server. The downloads available are operating system specific and assume that you are using an x86 processor set. With the power of the openSUSE Build Service working behind the scenes, it might be possible to make installation more tenable for educators who are not moonlighting as IT staff but want to run this on whatever hardware they have. An additional benefit outside the realm of education is that this may present a better tool for development projects than simply using wikis. Greenstone is a digital library package and is geared towards having excellent indexing for searching archives. Proof of concept databases are already hosted by the project team showing how e-mail archives can be made quite readily searchable. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/308078
