In the real life we found many cases where we need to open, print and in some cases change/edit little bit a technical draft drawing. Unfortunately most of the cases people use the AutoCAD *.dwg and alyke file formats. Business case (Partner benefit): - openSUSE.org: Since the time of KDE 3 when the qcad somehow did the - job, now we do not have no any good draftig solution in openSUSE. It's not free, but one option from the rather small selection of professional CAD systems available on Linux in the architecture/building engineering field. #2: Bruno Limmer (brunomcl) (2011-07-31 07:46:00) As a structural engineer CAD is a primary tool at work, and since migrating to oS 10.0 the search for an AutoCAD-like CAD package for linux has been one of my few frustrations until Ares Commander, Bricscad and Braftsight became available. I've reported on my initial impressions at the opensuse forum: http://forums.opensuse.org/forums/english/other-forums/news-announcements/te... (sorry, I don't know how to shortcut the link). Currently I use (at my company) bought-for Pro versions of Bricscad 11, which I find good and stable enough for production use with openSUSE 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4 64 bits, although it still have some bugs to iron out. There is no free version of Bricscad, only 30-day trials, so I think that including it in the distro is not a real option. Draftsight, on the other hand, is free for personal use (i think) but not opensource, so perhaps it could be included in the Non-OSS repo/image. It does require registration (including a valid e-mail) to download, so some kind of agreement may be necessary between Dassault and openSUSE. From my brief experimenting with Draftsight I can say that it is: 1) 2D-only, very similar in capabilities to AutoCAD Light. 2) Very polished qt-based interface. 3) Considerably slower (in my machines) than Bricscad, not to the point of un-usability, but perhaps a bit annoying. 4) Uses native DWG format (version 10 at least) so it's very, very compatible with AutoCAD drawings. 5) It's interface is very similar to AutoCAD's. Any AutoCAD user will feel right at home in it, and as a CAD learning tool it would enable a new CAD user to familiarize him/herself with AutoCAD usage as well.
