Feature changed by: Raymond Wooninck (tittiatcoke) Feature #311664, revision 4 Title: Add Recoll as default desktop search application openSUSE Distribution: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Desirable Requested by: Bill P (google01103) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: As Beagle is no longer actively maintained nor included in the standard repositories openSuse no longer provides a default desktop search application. Recoll would be a desirable replacement Reasons for inclusion: - actively developed - open source - QT based gui (though thought of as a KDE app it is QT) - Gui has a a list and a table mode (and kio and kreunner for KDE4) - indexing can be real time or manually initiated - light on cpu usage - well reviewed (see review links below) - many formats indexed Issues (noobie mostly) expressed in the forum here http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/4552... and responded to by the develorer here http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/4552... and here http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/4552... Issues raised: - real time indexing is not automatically enabled - there is some set up for all indexible file types to be enabled Note: Appears to me that if the dev does a little regarding initial install options and the required ancillary packages are moved from contrib and KDE extra to the main repo it would be ready to go Linux desktop search reviews (recent and focusing on Recoll): http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/6-of-the-best-desktop-se... http://tuxradar.com/content/best-linux-desktop-search-tools http://www.wikinfo.org/index.php/Comparison_of_desktop_search_software http://richfriedeman.com/2010/02/choosing-an-open-source-desktop-search-tool... Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Because desktop search is useful and expected by many users and as of 11.4 openSuse does not provide a default application to provide this functionality for all desktop environments provided. Discussion: #1: John Andrews (swerdna) (2011-03-14 23:45:14) It's astonishing that openSUSE 11.3 would be released without an installed default Desktop Search facility; how odd is that? I endorse this Feature fully. I've tested Recoll in 11.4 -- it's great. I ran a comparison between Recoll and Google Desktop, Recoll wins IMHO. We need it now that Beagle is gone. #2: John Andrews (swerdna) (2011-03-14 23:46:28) (reply to #1) Opps -- of course, I meant 11.4. + #3: Raymond Wooninck (tittiatcoke) (2011-03-20 11:38:53) + Did you ever indicated the two issues mentioned (about the startup + config) to the developer ? If not, then I will follow up with the + developer as that I am the one packaging Recoll. + I have indicated this request to the KDE team to see if we can included + it in the default repo. However from a KDE perspective it might be + difficult as that the default search client for the KDE desktop is + strigi. However I agree with you that strigi is still far away from + where Recoll is at the moment. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/311664
