Feature changed by: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (RGBsuse) Feature #310225, revision 7 Title: VLC in opensuse openSUSE-11.4: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Desirable Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Desirable Requested by: Agustin Chavarria (dj_ubun_1) Description: Hi! VLC is a great media player, it awesome, and it will be good, to add like a default media player in opensuse 11.4, because, VLC can play any type of video without codecs. Totem and Kaffeine have problems with codecs because the licence, but VLC doesnt have problem with licence. What do you think? Discussion: #1: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (rgbsuse) (2010-07-23 17:02:29) Already suggested here: #309259 Include VLC (309259) .
VLC can play any type of video without codecs ???? That's not true. Codecs are "build in": VLC have the same "codec problems" as mplayer, xine, etc. In order to include VLC on openSUSE the same "cuts" performed on xine need to be done.
#2: Pavol Rusnak (prusnak) (2010-07-23 17:17:00) VLC repository is in community repositories. Situation can't be changed at the moment ... #3: Lee Matheson (oldcpu) (2010-07-24 20:00:24) Any vlc version build by SuSE-GmbH or the community for openSUSE to be packaged as part of the installation CD or DVD will be need to be crippled (with the most useful codecs not included). Hence it won't be of much use. Thus I would rather see the community resources and the SuSE-GmbH resources spent elsewhere than on a crippled version of vlc. Instead IMHO we need to keep encouraging the Packman packagers and the videolan packagers to package 'vlc' for openSUSE and post on their repositories. + #4: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (rgbsuse) (2010-07-25 14:42:54) (reply to + #3) + As mentioned on #309259, the main advantage of adding VLC, even if + crippled, is the possibility to add the upcoming VLC-phonon backend on + main repository. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/310225
