Feature changed by: Karl Cheng (qantas94heavy) Feature #310567, revision 9 Title: Integrated alien installer - openSUSE-11.4: Unconfirmed + openSUSE Distribution: Rejected by Karl Cheng (qantas94heavy) + reject reason: Very difficult to maintain, would give false impression + of support for other package types and reduces incentive for developers + to submit packages to openSUSE main repositories. Priority - Requester: Important + Requester: Desirable - Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed - Priority - Requester: Important Requested by: Jeremy Thornton (leebrad) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: Add alien into zypper/yast so that if .deb is attempted to be installed then a message would launch saying it is not compatible but an attempt will be made to make it compatible and then alien would automatically launch behind the scenes do its work and install just like a standard rpm. This would not help unify the linux systems, but on an end-user experience, it is a little easier than the command line (no learning required - Dangerous! I know), and for all purposes considered new users would not know the difference. I understand it could get messy if a user gets deb happy for installing, but what do you think? Discussion: #1: Ilya Chernykh (ansus) (2010-09-22 19:00:07) Those developers who ship their software in .deb, .tgz or .bin formats openly break with the LSB specification as published by the Linux Foundation. It requires use of RPM package format for third-party software: http://refspecs.linux-foundation.org/LSB_4.0.0/LSB-Core-generic/LSB-Core-gen... (http://refspecs.linux-foundation.org/LSB_4.0.0/LSB-Core-generic/LSB-Core-gen... 5B/url%5D) the package format itself is also standardised: http://refspecs.linux-foundation.org/LSB_4.0.0/LSB-Core-generic/LSB-Core-gen... The alien utility was designed solely to be used on non-RPM systems to become compatible with LSB packages. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/310567
