Feature changed by: Roger Luedecke (Shadowolf7) Feature #312894, revision 5 Title: Adopt Kaptan Desktop Greeter in openSUSE openSUSE 12.1: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Desirable Requested by: Drew Adams (druonysus) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: Pardus is a great KDE distro and has one of the best "Desktop Greeter" of any KDE distro I have ever used, Kaptan. "Kaptan is a wizard that helps user to customize desktop enviroment after installing Pardus. While Kaptan is giving some information about Pardus, it also sets basic configures such as internet connection, wall paper and so on." http://developer.pardus.org.tr/projects/kaptan/ Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Kaptan facilitates these features from one start-up desktop greeter wizard: Mouse configuration Theme and KDE Menu selection Setting wall paper Asking user to search with Strigi Network management Smolt for sending hardware information Discussion: #1: Yannis Anthymidis (evropi) (2011-10-16 23:47:46) I disagree. Although it's definitely a nice program, the actions it facilitates can easily be found even by a new user. This sort of setup would be better off included in the installation program of openSUSE (not sure what it's called, it's reminiscent of Tribe in Chakra though). Furthermore, notifications pop up immediately upon installation in case the network has problems, at least under Ethernet. And again, under a wireless connection, the symbol to set up a connection is self-explanatory to anyone who has ever used a computer before or walked outside a coffee shop (these days that is!). Finally, I find its use of the "Kaptan" (a cartoon ship captain) mascot off- putting and far too immature for a project like openSUSE. Not only is Kaptan inappopriate, but also needless and a delay for users waiting to use the system much like the infamous 20-step graphical Debian installation procedure. #2: Steven Sroka (lin-unix) (2011-10-23 23:57:06) (reply to #1) I agree with some of your points Yannis, but the current greeter is not very good. A month ago (or so) some openSUSE developers were talking about changing the greeter. So this FATE is right up their alley. I think the Kaptan greeter (greatly simplified) would be most welcome. + #3: Roger Luedecke (shadowolf7) (2011-10-24 04:48:51) + Brilliant! This is exactly what I had in mind. We can of course alter + it to suit our needs and branding. Besides that it can be informative, + it can easily introduce people to the fun of KDE theming! -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/312894
