Feature changed by: Sławomir Lach (Lachu) Feature #310433, revision 6 Title: Support for apt-url openSUSE-11.4: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Neutral Requested by: Jiri Masek (masekj) Description: In the fact there are many webpages and articles (not only ubuntu tutorials) using apt-url feature to install software, would be nice if openSUSE implements own solution for this feature. My idea is following: - There is a webpage containing this: Install Thunderbird (for example, it can be banshee, gimp, inkscape, or any other package) - User click on "Install Thunderbird" button, and then YaST (or other zypper/libzypp gui) is called. - openSUSE search all added repositories for linked package (in this case thunderbird) and install it (or shows a dialog "Package was not found, please add repository containing this package" or "Software is already installed on your computer"). Think that this is very simple and it can help a little bit to starting users. Also it is a little more comfortable for any user :-) Discussion: #1: Michal Marek (michal-m) (2010-08-26 12:30:38) Have a look at those 1-Click-Install links at http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=thunderbird&baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.3&exclude_filter=home% 3A&exclude_debug=true :) #2: Jiri Masek (masekj) (2010-08-26 13:54:53) (reply to #1) I know that SUSE have 1-Click install for a long time. I mean apt-url support as "Compatibility issue". Know, that 1-click install is really better than apt-url (apt-url can not add repository). #3: Sławomir Lach (lachu) (2010-08-27 12:06:33) OpenSUSE already supports for Yast-one-click-install and PackageKit- webbrowser-plugin. I think, there's no matter to add new one and very simple. It won't break anythink in cases, where Canonical won't add new features to it. My little suggestions: - After error, suggest to use Yast-one-click install on this page("Apt- url fails to install package. If web page supports Yast-one-click mechanism, use it instead"). - Suggest to change repositories also on error(add new repository) - Suggest also to uses search for software/repository Yast's module Ubuntu won't support PackageKit web browser plugin for long time. It don't support for PackageKit yet. + #4: Sławomir Lach (lachu) (2010-08-27 12:07:49) + I think, that better is asks Canonical to support for Yast-One-Click + Install, because it's designed to be multiOSes. Apt-url in current + version doesn't making any problems with implementation, so we can + implement Apt-Url too. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/310433
