[opensuse-factory] Amarok
Why is it every time I upgrade amarok becomes more of a pain in the tail. This is as root user calling amarok. This is a fresh load of 11.4 RC1 Yes I have gotten as much as possible from Packman but several dependencies are missing and then this DBUS headache. It's not stupid to always want to be lord and master of your universe. I always run as root, have since forever (have paid for that choice too;). If you couldn't possibly care less about security, it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

And no one is going to fire you for doing so. There are many guys in positions that would get them fired if found to be doing so and a serious suspicious problem arose that may have nothing at all to do with running as root. Well sure, there are lots of places where it matters not one whit whether you fire ToyOfChoice up as root or unprivileged too, you are just as fired either way. My only moderate objection was use of the word stupid. You can run things as root without being called stupid. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

But then you have to log in as root, not just start random applications as root.

Life would be boring without a bit of disagreement.

phonon-4.4.4 + backends is supposed to have automatic codec download and the use of packman packages might cause amarok problems. The use of amarok as root might even break your system. Disclaimer: running amarok as a root is a damn fool thing to do. It can access multiple online services, and the long-term attitude from some of its developers towards defects is such that I barely trust it to run as user. The error message says there is no session bus running, so I guess you logged in as an unprivileged user then su'd to root. Most KDE apps expect there to be a bus. You can launch amarok as root and start a new session bus for it using 'kdesu dbus-launch amarok. No, but I basically agree with David. I mentioned the dbus-launch technique because the skill level on this list should include some knowledge of how to break the rules.
