[opensuse-factory] Fatal Error during recording Input Output error
Dear list mates, I downloaded x86_64 and i686 architectures for opeSUSE-13.2-GNOME-Live- Build0019 (Release Candidate 1). SHA256sum verfified on both. Maybe I missed some information these days or simply need some clarification. Each time I try to record these ISOs on DVD I got the error" Fatal Error during recording:Input/Output error" from K3b. Everything is up to date on two machines I tried. I forgot to mention x86_64 ISO was able to work from bootable USB stick for x86_64 hardware. GNOME-3.14 have received plenty improvements on the user interface (there are NO more oversized windows hard to navigate). However, it does not make sense to try it on i686 for x86 hardware because the BIOS limitations to boot from USB stick. If we can not burn an ISO for i686 on DVD it will be hard to install on these architecture because BIOS limitation to boot from USB. I did not find if Bug or temporary condition. Please clarify. Thanks in Advanced. Rick -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

What limitation is that? 32 bit machines can boot from USB if they were built after the year when they created the standard for doing so, which was way before 64 bit machines became popular. There is a limitation with UEFI, though. Not BIOS. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. There is no way to boot from USB port.

Maybe I should say Firmware BIOS limitations. Some vendors machine manufacturers (top 5 recognized brands) does not make USB bootable option available on BIOS (firmware) disregards if you may keep it updated. So, matter of fact, you will not boot a Live openSUSE 13.2 RC1 from USB on 32 bit hardware with no option to boot from USB port on BIOS.
There is a limitation with UEFI, though. Not BIOS.

Anyway, at this moment, my concern is Live DVDs may not be an option to test drivers on your hardware or make an openSUSE-13.2 RC1 drive test. This is because Not possible to burn it into a DVD media without errors or hang ups. And openSUSE Live on USB stick is not viable on those older hardware. Is there a workaround, it is going to be a permanent condition, what will be the options? Each time I try to record these ISOs on DVD I got the error" Fatal Error during recording:Input/Output error" from K3b. Everything is up to date on two machines I tried.
My first guess would be a hardware problem or a broken DVD, but trying on two machines makes this a bit less likely (but it is still possible). Does K3b only display the "Fatal Error" you mentioned, or more details? (If it displays more details, please paste them into your next mail.) Also check your logfiles (/var/log/messages, journalctl -b and dmesg output if they contain something that could be related to the problem. If you don't find anything that points to a hardware problem or broken DVD, I'd recommend to open a bugreport. Regards, Christian Boltz --

It could also be HAL or something sending commands to the drive when it is not allowed. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=361643 # lsscsi [18:0:0:0] cd/dvd HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 1.00 /dev/sr0 # cat /etc/hal/fdi/information/media-check-disable-storage_model_DVD_RAM_GH22NP20.fdi <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <deviceinfo version="0.2"> <device> <match key="info.udi" string="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_RAM_GH22NP20"> <merge key="storage.media_check_enabled" type="bool">false</merge> </match> </device> </deviceinfo> # ps ax | grep s[t]orage 3295 ? In that case, it would happen consistently and always. This is not the case. Thank you for point me there. It only happens with openSUSE-13.2-GNOME-Live-Build0019-xxxx Never happens with other ISOs or openSUSE-13.2-DVD-xxxx.iso Maybe I misinterpreted Carlos above. I thought it was known behavior on optical media and Live-xxx.iso were only targeting for use with USB Flash Drive. Hence, some 32 bit machines on my side are not able to boot from USB Flash Drive (stick) making a blind install to test drivers before final. Thank you for your response. Thanks, Christian. Good points to watch. No. It is not hardware problem because it works perfectly with all other ISOs (inluding openSUSE-13.2-DVD) exception are openSUSE-13.2-GNOME-Live-Build0019- i686.iso and openSUSE-13.2-GNOME-Live-Build0019-x86_64.iso I tested with an external USB DVD-Read/Writer device with the same output. So hardware failures are discarded.

It does not show anything unusual. If you think you still need to watch into I will provide you gladly.

I am prone to do this. I just wanted to check before to fill a bug report with known bug (duplicated)
